Faculty of Veterinary Medicine cooperates with University of Zurich

November 30, 2018

The University of Zurich is a classical university in Switzerland. It is the largest educational institution in the whole country. Currently, approximately 24 thousand students study there.

The university was founded in 1833 from the existing colleges of theology, law, medicine and a new faculty of philosophy. Currently, the university has seven faculties: Philosophy, Human Medicine, Economic Sciences, Law, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Theology and Veterinary Medicine. The University is ranked fifty among the best universities in the world.

This autumn, the assistant of Volodymyr Kasianenko Department of Animal Anatomy, Histology and Pathomorphology, Oleksiy O. Melnyk, received an invitation from Professor Mariusz Kowalewski from the Institute of Anatomy of the University of Zurich and had an opportunity to undertake a two-week scientific internship and get acquainted with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

During the internship, Oleksiy Melnyk got acquainted with the methodology of teaching morphological disciplines, giving lectures and conducting preparatory work, in which he directly participated. The young scientist closely studied modern histological techniques and methods of conducting histological research, including electron microscopic studies. The methods of making plate and volume plastinated anatomical preparations, as well as hollow organs and organs in liquids aroused a lot of interest.

During the internship, Oleksiy O. Melnyk established close contacts with colleagues, who work at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zurich. Oleksiy O. Melnyk also presented the achievements of Volodymyr Kasianenko Department of Animal Anatomy, Histology and Pathomorphology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of NUBiP of Ukraine, namely plastinated anatomical preparations. He also dwelled on the work of the Museum of Anatomy, which received positive reviews from Swiss colleagues. At the end of the internship, Oleksiy received a gift for our Museum of Anatomy from the scientist of the Institute of Anatomy, Urs Müller - a plastinated preparation of the sagittal cutting of the horse's finger. In addition, as a sign of friendship between Volodymyr Kasianenko Department of Animal Anatomy, Histology and Pathomorphology of NUBiP Ukraine and the Institute of Anatomy of the University of Zurich, Professor Mariusz Kowalewski presented the land collected on the territory of the Faculty for our Morphologists’ Friendship flower bed.
