The university team's first entry into fishing competitions
The Open Kyiv Cup in sports fishing with a feeder was held on 19-20 April 2025. The team representing the sport fishing club of our university «Fishermen of NULES» participated in the competition. This event marked their inaugural performance.
The competitions took place in a scenic location in Kyiv, situated along the embankment of the Rusanivsky Canal. Representatives from both the Ukrainian fishing sports federations and the amateur fishing community participated, with the primary objective being to encourage public interest in this sport and to promote it. Such competitions are an excellent opportunity to spend time outdoors, test your skills, understand the peculiarities of fishing and meet like-minded people. It combines a relaxed atmosphere with an environmental responsibility. The competitions are based on the «catch and release» principle, which is a manifestation of an environmentally responsible attitude to fish stocks and contributes to their conservation.
Our team was diligently preparing for the competition, guided by the club leader, Head of the Aquaculture Department of the Faculty of Faculty of Livestock Raising and Water Bioresources, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor Vitalii BEKH, and team captain, Denys RUDAKOV, a first-year Master's student of the Water Bioresources and Aquaculture programme. The participants familiarised themselves with the rules and programme of the competition, approaches to the choice of tackle and fishing techniques, and the features of the reservoir where the Cup was held. Our students are aware of the significance of amateur fishing, recognising its dual role in providing recreation and impacting the ecological state of water resources.
The competition was fierce, and each participant had the chance to showcase their skills. The fishing sectors were determined by drawing lots. The catch was weighed and the results calculated. The team was overwhelmed by the emotions, because this was more than just a competition; it was also a new experience of communication, exchange of knowledge and ideas. The team put up a hard fight, clinching third place in the team competition!
The university team's first participation in fishing competitions was a challenge, but a significant step forward. It strengthened the team spirit, revealed the potential of each participant and immersed them in the atmosphere of healthy competition. The team members are already discussing plans for the next competition. They will continue to train, improve their skills and recruit new members to build an even stronger team. This event has proven that character, determination and a desire for new achievements are the keys to success in all areas of life. The team is excited about new competitions, new acquaintances and, of course, unforgettable emotions.
