NUBiP scientists are participants of the International Practical forum «DAIRY FARMING INDUSTRY: forming marginality»

October 8-9 in Lviv hosted the International Practical forum «DAIRY FARMING INDUSTRY: forming marginality», which brought together more than 200 participants from Ukraine and abroad. Among them are more than 10 lecturers and graduates of NUBIP of Ukraine. I am pleased that the forum organizers invited Mykola POVOZNIKOV, doctor of agricultural sciences, professor, head of the department of beekeeping of the faculty of animal husbandry and aquatic bioresources of NUBiP of Ukraine as a moderator.

A large number of specialists from different regions caused interesting discussions and productive conversations.

The first to speak was Vadym CHAHAROVSKY chairman of the board of Directors of the Union of dairy enterprises of Ukraine with the theme «Dairy industry of Ukraine in the context of European integration». He noted that not all negative forecasts came true. Although the trend to reduce the number of cows remains, this is happening at the expense of the private sector. But in the industrial sector, a small increase is noticeable: +0.5%, or up to 382 thousand cows, as of August 01, 2025. In total, there were 1.14 million cows in Ukraine on this date (-9.2%).

Milk production by dairy farms increased by 5.6% in January-July compared to the same period in 2024 (up to 1.83 million tons). t). In total, 3.5 million tons are expected to be processed in 2025 (the share of the population is 9%), which will exceed the pre-war figure.

The milk production and processing industry remains attractive for investment and has export potential. A noticeable geographical transformation — in the top three largest "dairy regions", where Poltava and Vinnytsia regions traditionally continue to lead, the Khmelnytskyi region has gained a foothold, pushing Cherkasy region.

Integration into the EU will be accompanied by drastic changes for the industry. 60% of domestic milk does not meet EU standards, and the problem remains the traceability of products from the farm to the supermarket shelf.

Ukraine should take into account the European experience of cooperation among milk producers. Family dairy farms can become a significant factor in the development of the industry. Another challenge is the personnel crisis.

After his speech, a discussion panel began, which was attended by, in addition to Vadym CHAHAROVSKY, Ihor LYUBARSKY — director of the raw material procurement department of Halychyna DC, Ruslan VYSHNEVY — director of animal husbandry at TAS-Ahro agricultural holding, Heorhiy KURTASOV — director of LLC "Molochni riky (Milk rivers)" Poltava region and other forum participants. • industry trends by reviewing global and domestic trends in the development of the dairy industry.

  • increase profitability by discussing ways to increase the profitability of dairy farms.

  • effective management through the analysis of effective management methods on farms.
