Japanese technologies for Ukrainian energy: postgraduate student Roman POLISHCHUK from the Educational and Scientific Institute of energy, automation and energy saving completed his JICA Internship

Roman POLISHCHUK, a postgraduate student at the Educational and Scientific Institute of energy, automation and energy saving of NUBiP of Ukraine, completed his international internship in Japan focused on power system stabilization and renewable energy integration. The acquired experience would form the basis for further scientific research and the development of solutions for Ukraine's energy sector.

On September 28-October 09, 2026, Roman POLISHCHUK represented Ukraine at the JICA Knowledge Co-Creation Program (KCCP) within the framework of the course Stabilizing Power Systems to Introduce Various Kinds of Renewable Energy (B). He also works as a state expert for the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.

The program, organized by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in conjunction with JEPIC and Hokuriku T&D, brought together 14 specialists from 12 countries around the world. The training took place in Tokyo, Toyama, and Fukui, combining theoretical classes with visits to energy facilities.

Japanese experience for Ukraine's energy system

In Tokyo, participants learned about the work of the national coordination center OCCTO, which is responsible for coordinating the operation of Japan's energy zones and inter-regional electricity flows. During the training, Roman POLISHCHUK presented a report on the state of Ukraine's energy system and the experience of ensuring its resilience under martial law.

In the Hokuriku region, a graduate student was studying the organization of dispatch management at various levels, the operation of high-voltage substations, and the specifics of operating solar and wind power plants.

The program covered the automation of electrical grids, frequency and voltage regulation, integration of renewable energy sources, application of energy storage systems, as well as remote diagnostics of energy equipment using drones and artificial intelligence.

From international internship to practical solutions

The knowledge gained is directly related to the dissertation research of Roman POLISHCHUK at the Educational and Scientific Institute of energy, automation and energy saving, which covers microgrid modeling, distributed generation integration, and improving the resilience of electrical networks.

The final stage of the internship was the presentation of an individual «Action Plan» project to experts from JICA, JEPIC, and Hokuriku T&D. Roman successfully presented proposals for adapting Japanese approaches to network constraint management and power grid automation in Ukraine. The proposed solutions are aimed at accelerating the integration of distributed generation, developing energy storage systems, and improving the reliability of electricity supply.

Based on the results of his internship, Roman POLISHCHUK received an international JICA certificate. The experience gained in Japan will be used in his dissertation research and in his work on technical solutions for the Ukrainian energy system.

International cooperation, modern technologies, and scientific developments are important components in training specialists capable of working on the resilience and recovery of Ukraine's energy sector.
