Open data on Ukraine’s forests: where to find it and how to use it.
On 29 October 2026, the Educational and Research Institute of Forestry and Landscape-Park Management of the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine (NUBiP of Ukraine) is holding the scientific and practical seminar “What do we know about Ukraine’s forests: open data and FSC™ certification”. The seminar is intended for forestry and wood-processing professionals, public institutions, certification bodies and NGOs, as well as buyers of wood products.
A substantial body of information on Ukraine’s forests already exists: data from the electronic timber tracking system, forest management planning records, forest health monitoring results, remote sensing data and more. To work with it in practice, users need to know who holds each dataset, where it is published, how complete it is, and how often and under what procedure it is updated. Access to some datasets is restricted for the duration of martial law.
Buyers of wood products, including those outside Ukraine, are not always aware of what information on the origin of raw material is available from open sources or how to use it in due diligence. This applies both to the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 on deforestation-free products (EUDR) and to FSC™ certification.
The seminar aims to map the open forest data currently available and to discuss with data holders and users how to make these data more accessible and of higher quality. Participants will learn which sources can be used for risk assessment and to demonstrate the legal origin of timber.
On 29 October 2026, the seminar runs from 10:00 to 16:00 Kyiv time (EET, UTC+2), which is 09:00–15:00 CET, in Academic Building No. 1, NUBiP of Ukraine, 19 Horikhuvatskyi Shliakh St., Kyiv, and online via Zoom, with simultaneous interpretation into English.
Please register via the form at https://forms.gle/WLSAntZyukjyjsU5A by 28 October inclusive.
If there is an air-raid alert, those attending in person will go to the shelter.
