NATIONAL ROUND TABLE FIRES IN THE NATURAL AND CULTURAL LANDSCAPES OF UKRAINE: TOWARDS A HOLISTIC FIRE MANAGEMENT APPROACH IN FORESTS, AGRICULTURAL LANDS AND OTHER ECOSYSTEMS

National Round Table: «Fires in the natural and cultural landscapes of Ukraine: Towards a holistic fire management approach in forests, agricultural lands and other ecosystems», was held at the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine.

The National Round Table was organized by the Regional Eastern European Fire Monitoring Center in co-operation with the Global Fire Monitoring Center (GFMC) and support of the Council of Europe and Major Hazards Agreement EUR-OPA.

Representatives of State Agency of Forest Resources of Ukraine, Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, State Emergency Service of Ukraine, State Statistics Service of Ukraine, Ministry of Interior of Ukraine, Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute of Civil Protection, and other stakeholders participated. Observers from Ukrainian OSCE Office and experts from Germany, FYR Macedonia, Moldova and the Republic of Belarus participated in the Regional Eastern European Consultations.

The purpose of the National Round Table was to discuss the problem fires in the natural and cultural landscapes of Ukraine, their causes and consequences, and possible solutions this problem.

During the National Round Table discussions in the working groups where discussed the key issues of preventing the fires, preparedness of fire services to response on natural fires, organization of official statistics, detecting, monitoring and responding to natural fires, and their consequences.

As a result of the National Round Table the generalizations and recommendations were elaborated, and also short recommendation of the towards a holistic fire management approach in forests, agricultural lands and other ecosystems where discussed.
