 Happy Independence Day, Ukraine!

On 24 August 1991, the Ukrainian Parliament adopted the Act of Declaration of Independence. And a yellow and blue flag appeared on the building of the Verkhovna Rada.
Despite outside concerns that Ukraine could split into east and west, on the national referendum the turnout was over 80% and the result of the referendum was that over 92% voted in favour of their independence. Today celebrates Ukraine’s Independence Day, an annual commemoration of the nation’s rich cultural heritage and journey toward freedom.
The 30th anniversary of Ukraine's independence came as the country is locked in a bitter tug-of-war with Russia, which in 2014 annexed Crimea and has since been backing a separatist insurgency in eastern Ukraine.

Delegations from 46 countries and blocs, including 14 presidents, attended the parade in Kyiv.
Students of the English-speaking group shared their impressions of the celebration of the 30th anniversary of Ukraine's independence.
