International internship at Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences (UPWr) (Poland)

    From June 21 to June 25, 2021, Associate Professor of the Faculty of Livestock Raising and Water Bioresources Lyudmila Zlamanyuk and Associate Professor of the Faculty of Livestock Raising and Water Bioresources Natalia Kos participated in the international internship at Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, which was a part of Erasmus+ Project “Improvement of laboratory practice skills for specialists in the agro-food sector in Eastern Europe” (Ag-Lab).

    On the first day of the internship, Krzysztof Kafarski, Head of the International Relations Department at UPWr, delivered a presentation on Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences and gave a tour of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Afterwards, Aleksandra Tabiś mentored practical class on “Detection of staphylococcal enterotoxin genes by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test.

    The second day of the internship began at the Department of Epizootiology and Clinic of Birds and Exotic Animals, where Joanna Rosenberger presented the activities of the department devoted to breeding of endangered wild birds, equipment used for teaching and research (incubators, devices for analyzing egg quality and embryo viability) and methods for assessing the fertilization of non-incubated eggs. She also demonstrated the process of collection and freezing of poultry sperm. Later, Małgorzata Korzeniowska conducted a practical class on "Sensory analysis".

    The third day was devoted to practical work on the detection of Food adulteration by PCR test under the guidance of Aleksandra Tabiś.

   The next working day was dedicated to the visit to the Epi-Vet laboratory at the Infectious Diseases Clinic, which conducts microbiological, serological and mycological examinations used to diagnose diseases of dogs and cats, as well as cattle and exotic animals. During the visit the participants got acquainted with the functioning of Agro-Vet private accredited laboratory, which is engaged in the examination of poultry, analysis of poultry meat, and creating accreditation requirements.

    On the final day of the internship the participants together with Katarzyna Kosek-Paszkowska visited the official veterinary laboratory in Wroclaw that conducts official examinations used in veterinary inspection: microbiological, serological, chemical tests of samples taken from farms, food, animals.

    The participants received the certificates upon completion of the internship.
