About the Program

The “Plant Protection and Quarantine” educational program is designed to train specialists who possess knowledge of the biology of pests, disease-causing organisms, and weeds, and who are able to develop effective measures for their control. Throughout the program, students learn methods of phytosanitary monitoring, laboratory diagnostics, and forecasting the development of harmful organisms. Particular attention is paid to practical training: future bachelor’s degree students learn to use digital tools in plant protection, learn to justify the integrated use of modern plant protection products with an emphasis on biological control, and study the regulatory framework governing domestic and international quarantine. Graduates of the program are in high demand at agricultural holdings, state phytosanitary inspection agencies, diagnostic laboratories, and companies that distribute pesticides and seeds.

Purpose of the Educational Program

The goal of the educational and professional program is to equip future specialists with a comprehensive set of knowledge, abilities, and skills for application in their professional activities in the field of plant protection and quarantine, aimed at solving complex problems related to the environmentally sound and economically viable protection of plants from harmful organisms, conducting phytosanitary monitoring, including the development of pest management systems, disease progression monitoring, and weed control at the species and population levels, ensuring compliance with phytosanitary measures in crop production technologies; inspecting products from the crop production and forestry sectors to ensure compliance with legislation on plant protection and quarantine and to ensure phytosanitary safety; and developing scientifically sound integrated plant protection systems and monitoring their implementation.

Subject Area of the Educational Program

The program's subject area covers agrobiocenoses of cultivated plants, methods for identifying quarantine pests, and principles of environmentally safe crop protection.

Features of the Educational Program

The bachelor’s-level educational and professional program “Plant Protection and Quarantine” is distinguished by its comprehensive curriculum, which combines an in-depth study of the biological characteristics of harmful organisms with the mastery of modern methods of integrated protection of agrocenoses. A distinctive feature of the program is its focus on practical diagnostics and phytosanitary monitoring, where students learn to work with both traditional microscopic methods and innovative IT solutions, including digital weed maps and drones for crop surveys. In addition to the technical aspects, the program places significant emphasis on the regulatory framework: future specialists study international phytosanitary standards (ISPS), customs control procedures, and product certification rules in detail, enabling them to work successfully both at agricultural enterprises and in government agencies responsible for phytosanitary safety, ensuring high-quality crops and their compliance with expert requirements.

Employment

A specialist is qualified to perform work in a profession whose designation corresponds to the National Classifier of Ukraine “Classifier of Professions” DK 003:2010: 2213.2 – plant protection agronomist; plant quarantine inspector; 2211.2 – entomologist; entomophytopathologist; 3212 – plant protection inspector.

Further Study

Continuing education to earn a second (master’s) degree.

Additional Information

The program is designed to provide professional and practical training for plant protection and quarantine specialists in the areas of comprehensive monitoring of harmful organisms and plant resistance, as well as environmentally sound and economically viable plant protection against harmful organisms. The educational and vocational program includes academic and practical training at agricultural enterprises, structural units of the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, phytosanitary laboratories, research institutions, and plant protection companies. Each year, students in this program complete practical training at companies in Europe.
