Mechanical, physical and aesthetical properties of hornbeam wood as a material for furniture or joinery products can be improved by thermal modification. Heat-treatment technology was carried out under different conditions: temperatures of 160, 190 and 220 degrees C and time of 1, 10 and 20 hours. The influence of heat treating on physical (density, colour, moisture absorption and volume shrinkage), mechanical (compression strength along, across fibres and bending strength) and technological (impact resistance and wear resistance) properties of hornbeam wood were investigated. Analysis of physical and mechanical properties of hornbeam wood heat-treated for different time allowed researchers to determine optimal parameters of thermal modification: temperature of 190 degrees C and duration for 8-12 hours. It was found that the effect of high temperature on the technological properties of hornbeam wood is insignificant.Regards,Ivan Rogovskii
