General information
The department was founded in Kyiv Polytechnical Institute in 1898. After the separation of agricultural institute in 1923 a new stage of the development of the department had began. Since then it had been headed by professors V.Izbekov, M. Hryhoriev, Y. Skobets, L. Schegrov and others. From 1999 to 2006 the department had been headed by the Honoured inventor of Ukraine, Doctor of chemical sciences, professor V. Kopilevych.
The present-day name “The department of analytical and bioinorganic chemistry and water quality” was confirmed in 2006. That year the associated professor V. Kosmatyi was elected as the head of the department. The structure of the department includes the accredited measuring laboratory of quality of the surface, underground, sewage waters and the objects of agricultural usage.
The department ensures training students of the education-qualification levels of Bachelor and Master in 12 subjects of chemical direction, writing Bachelor and Master diploma papers. It trains post-graduates in specialty “Inorganic Chemistry”.

The department staff
The department staff has been forming and is still being formed from the graduates of its own post-graduate courses as well as from research and educational workers who graduated from chemical faculties of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University and National Technical University of Ukraine (KPI). Now the staff consists of 3 Doctors of Chemistry, professors, 8 Candidates of Chemistry, associated professors and two lecturer assistants.
The department researches are carried out in three directions: regulated synthesis of individual and nitrogen-containing phosphates of the specified content and biological influence; the development of theoretical foundations of electrochemical definition of biogenic elements in the environmental objects; investigation of indicators of water usage quality and safety in agricultural sphere and recycling sewage waters sediments.
During the last years the lecturers and post-graduates issued 3 manuals, 18 teaching text-books, 25 methodical instructions. They have published 135 scientific articles, got 46 patents, synthesized 42 new chemical compounds.
On the basis of the department research developments they produced the device “M-XA 100-5 Analyzer” with the data program control for ecological monitoring of heavy metals content in environmental objects. The device has passed the state testing and was proved as a typical one and included into the State Register of measuring devices of Ukraine and was implemented on a series basis.

The department trains students of Bachelor EQL in the following disciplines:
1. Inorganic chemistry (training direction “Agronomy”)
2. Analytical chemistry (training direction “Agronomy”)
3. Bioinorganic chemistry (specialties ‘Veterinary medicine”, “Ecobiotechnology”, “Ecology and Environmental Protection”)
4. Biogeochemistry and environmental chemistry (specialty “Ecology and Environmental Protection”)
5. Biogenic elements chemistry (specialty “Ecobiotechnology”)
6. Environmental chemistry (specialty “Ecology and Environmental Protection”)
7. General and inorganic chemistry (specialty “Ecology and Environmental protection”)
8. Wastes bioconversion (specialty “Ecobiotechnology”)
9. Nanomaterials and nanotechnologies in ecology and environmental protection (specialty “Ecobiotechnology”).

The department trains students Master EQL in the following disciplines:
1. Environmental chemistry (for specialties “Ecology and environmental protection” “Agrochemistry and Soil Science”);
2. Methods of modern chemical analysis (for specialty “Ecology and environmental protection”);
3. Water quality monitoring in agrosphere (for specialty “Ecology and environmental protection”);
4. Utilization and neutralization of sewage waters sediments (for specialty “Ecology and environmental protection”);
5. Ecological safety of water ecosystems (resources) (for specialty “Ecology and environmental protection”);
6. Sewage water cleaning (for specialty “Ecology and environmental protection”);
7. Technology of cleaning, utilization and neutralization of sewage waters sediments (for specialty “Ecobiotechnology”);
8. Nanomaterials and nanotechnologies in ecobiotechnology (for specialty “Ecobiotechnology”);
9. Nanomaterials and nanotecnologies in ecology and environmental protection (for specialty “Ecology and environmental protection”).

Study laboratories
The department includes three specialized study laboratories:
- Inorganic and bioinorganic chemistry;
• Analytical chemistry and environmental chemistry;
• Quality and chemical ecology of water resources.
All of the labs are certified and equipped with the appropriate standard chemical devices for conducting laboratory classes. The laboratories are also equipped with the necessary heating devices (drying ovens, muffle furnaces, centrifuges, scales, appliances for water distillation, the necessary chemical reagents and appliances for conducting chemical experiments.
The department includes the accredited measuring laboratory of quality of surface, underground, and sewage waters and the objects of agricultural usage.
6 automated working places for determining heavy metals concentration in the environmental objects are arranged at the department.

Research and innovation activities
• Regulated synthesis of individual and nitrogen-containing phosphates of specified content and biological effect (the supervisor is Doctor of Chemistry, professor V. Kopilevych);
• Study of indicators of quality and safety of water usage and cleaning of production sewages in agrosphere of Ukraine (the supervisor is Doctor of Chemistry, professor V. Kopilevych);
• Development and improvement of methods of defining biogenic elements in the environmental objects by the method of inversion chronopotentiometry;
• Study of physical, chemical and biological properties of nanoliquids for the development of receipts of functional nanobiomaterials for plants and animal sciences (the supervisor is Doctor of Chemistry, professor V. Maksin).
• The department trains the diploma students in the teaching programs:
а – Bachelor in Ecology;
b – Master in Water Resources Ecology.
