The occupiers are destroying the ecosystems of the exclusion zone: 10,111 hectares have been destroyed by fire
Fires in the Exclusion Zone carry great radiological risks. Currently, control of the radiation background with the help of the Automated Radiation Control and fire extinguishing are impossible due to the occupation of the Exclusion Zone by russian troops. Satellite images from NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) are helping us capture major fires today, but the exact amount of fire outbreaks is unknown because of restrictions on remote sensing of the Ukrainian territory.
As of now, satellite data indicate the occurrence of 31 outbreaks of large fires in natural ecosystems and abandoned villages of the Exclusion Zone, covering a total area of over 10,111 hectares.
Main reasons of large fires:
- continuation of shelling and bombing by rashists;
- increase in temperature, dryness and no precipitation;
- lack of full-fledged operation of the fire landscape protection system in the Exclusion Zone.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine together with the State Agency of Ukraine for Exclusion Zone Management and the State Agency of Forest Resources of Ukraine continue to constantly monitor fires in the Exclusion Zone and take measures to eliminate them.
