The time of training is almost over – the knowledge remains forever
Against the backdrop of indescribably terrible military events students-philologists of the 2 year of study with zeal and a positive attitude learned the material of the discipline "Introduction to translation studies" at lectures and seminars. Attendance surprisingly averaged 80-95 and sometimes all 100 percent, and this is in the conditions of many of them traveling to other regions of the country, abroad, in the conditions of power outages, shelling and other unforeseen circumstances. In times of uncertainty, fear, and depression, there was a strong desire to distract them from sad thoughts and instill faith in our victory. How can this be related to translation classes? Through the special arrangement of classes and up-to-date factual material from various English-language sources with available official translations into Ukrainian to prove translation theories about the impressive success in the war of our armed forces and the patriotism of the population, the exploits of our heroes, which inspire unquestionable hope in our victory. Even at lectures, students raced, sometimes even in unison, shouting out answers, because constantly there were questions from the instructor that had to be answered quickly and get points, points, points... Students were distracted from disturbing thoughts and became as relaxed, cheerful and humorous as they had once been in a peaceful life. Students were particularly interested in the subject of coursework in the discipline, which they regularly presented in the form of slides and voice-over comments. It is simply amazing how creatively gifted our students are and how beautifully and intricately they can arrange the submission of term papers with a video sequence, beautiful illustrations, songs, movie roles, tables and accurate epigraphs and jokes. Everyone listened with genuine attention, so sometimes seminars and lectures were delayed for a longer time than the one that was allotted for pairs. Students deeply understand the importance of mastering translation theory and obtaining professional translation skills, so they carefully study all the postulates of translation science and take all planned tests and tasks seriously. I don't want to paint the process of learning translation theory very vividly. Let one of the students, Diana Lee, of the group ФілА--20003b speak out about it . Here's what she wrote in her post: «On November 4, one of the regular lectures of 2nd-year philologists at the faculty of humanities and pedagogy on discipline "Introduction to translation studies". Lecturer Sydoruk Halyna Ivanivna, as always, gave a masterful lecture.
Despite the planned and emergency blackouts of electricity and communications in the country, we connected to the maximum and worked hard. The lecture consisted of extremely interesting material necessary for our future profession. There were many examples of the peculiarities of translation from English, so that we would accurately understand the essence of the material presented. The topic of the lecture was extraction as a component of translation transformations. We were talking about shortening words in a journalistic style, about exceptions and translation rules. We learned about special constructions with verbs, expanded our knowledge about the reasons for introducing additional words in translation when the corresponding word or its lexical and semantic version is missing. We were working fruitfully, for which we received an assessment of our work accordingly. Our instructor easily answered any of our questions about the topic of the lecture. In general, all lectures are held in this way, we – students – listen attentively and write down the material that is given by the lecturer. If we have a question, we would definitely get an answer at the same moment. We are grateful for this discipline and the efforts of our instructor.
