History of the department
HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ANALYTICAL AND BIOINORGANIC CHEMISTRY AND WATER QUALITY
The department was established at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute from the moment of its creation in 1898 of the agricultural department, among the 20 academic disciplines of which a significant place was given to chemistry.
In that period, outstanding scientists such as Reformatskyi S.M. worked at the chemistry departments of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.
Reformatskyi S.M. - organic chemist, founder of the direction of metal-organic synthesis, author of the textbook "Introductory Course of Inorganic Chemistry", which went through 17 editions from 1893 to 1930, Pisarzhevskyi L.V. - the founder of physical chemistry, the developer of the electronic theory of redox reactions, Plotnikov V.O. - head of the mineral chemistry and electrochemistry of non-aqueous solutions department, who was the first to obtain metallic aluminum by electrolysis of non-aqueous solutions at normal temperatures, Konovalov M.I. - an organic chemist who developed the theory of nitration of organic compounds, methods of isolation and purification of various naphthenes.
Since 1923, the department has been a part of the KSGI, USGA, NAUU, NUBiP of Ukraine at the part of the structures of the Institute of Agrochemistry, Faculty of Agrochemistry and Soil Science, Natural and Humanitarian National Research Institute and Agrobiological faculty.
After the separation of the agricultural institute from KPI in 1923, the chemistry department was headed by professors V. O. Izbekov, M. G. Grigoriev, associate professors M. G. Chovnyk and Ya. P. Mezheny.
In 1954, professor E. M. Skobets became the head of the department of inorganic and analytical chemistry. He started the school of electrochemical methods of research of biogeochemical objects, which is still functioning today. From 1978 to 1999, the head of the department was Prof. L. M. Shchegrov, under whose leadership the direction of research on the chemistry of phosphates of divalent metals was created.
From 1999 to the present, the head of the department is the Honored Inventor of Ukraine, Doctor of Science, Prof. V. A. Kopilevich.
The current name of the department — analytical and bioinorganic chemistry and water quality — was approved by the Academic Council of the university in 2006.
