The Department of botany was created by Professor E.P. Votchal in 1898 at the Agricultural Department in Kiev Polytechnic Institute. In 1939 the department of botany was divided. Professor A.A. Kuzmenko was the first head of the newly created department of Plant Physiology and Microbiology. F.I. Zavgorodny was associated head of department since 1944 for 10 years. Since 1954 the Department was headed by Professor I.M. Tolmachev.
Professor S. Lebedev (1902-1989) was in charge of department since 1962, and over the next 18 years.
     In 1963 Department was renamed into the Department of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry. Since 1980, department was headed by: Associated Professor A.P. Larin (1980 - 1984), Associated Professor D. Lavrentovich (1984 - 1989), Professor S.S. Malyuta (1989 - 1992), Professor A. Bulah (1992 - 1998).
Since 1988, Department was named the Department of Plant Physiology and Biotechnology. In March 1998 Department was combined with the Department of Plant Breeding and Seed and headed by Dr. T.V. Chugunkova.
     Department of Plant Breeding and Plant Physiology was disjointed and the Department of Plant Physiology, Virology and Biotechnology was established in January 18, 2001. It was charged by Ph.D., Associated Professor Maxim D. Melnychuk. The experimental laboratory of phytovirology and biotechnology was created at the department in 1998.
     On the basis of Department of Plant Physiology, Virology and Biotechnology three departments were formed, among which the central was the department of ecobiotechnology and biodiversity has been established, which was headed by Prof., Academician of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences M.D. Melnychuk. Department of environmental biotechnology and biodiversity was established by a decision of the Academic Council protocol № 3 from 28.10.2004 and rector of the University № 560 from 29.11.2004.
