Current State of the Department


The Department of Veterinary Epidemiology and Animal Health Protection was established in July 2024 through the merger of the Department of Epizootology, Microbiology and Virology with the Department of Parasitology and Tropical Veterinary Medicine.
The department is headed by Volodymyr V. MELNYK, Candidate of Veterinary Sciences., Associate Professor.

The newly established department integrates three major academic areas that address issues of infectious animal pathology and provide teaching of professional disciplines for higher education students from the second to the sixth year of study.

Teaching in the microbiology block is carried out by highly qualified scientists: Professors T.V. MAZUR, L.M. VYHOVSKA, and M.L. RADZYKHOVSKYI, as well as Associate Professors M.V. MELNYK, G.V. KOZLOVSKA, M.V. IHNATOVSKA, and O.V. DYSHKANT.

Courses of the epizootology block are taught by Head of Department, Associate Professor V.V. MELNYK, Professors V.O. USHKALOV and V.V. NEDOSIEKOV, and Associate Professors N.G. SOROKINA, V.A. SYTNYK, V.M. SHEVCHUK, O.G. MARTYNIUK, Senior Lecturer M.O. ZHUKOVSKYI, and Assistant O.B. SHEVCHENKO.
Teaching in the parasitology block is provided by Professors N.M. SOROKA, M.V. HALAT, and S.A. NYCHYK, Associate Professor S.L. HONCHAROV, and Assistant O.V. FILIPENKO.

The mission of the department is to train highly qualified specialists in veterinary medicine who are capable of effectively addressing the challenges of prevention, diagnosis, and control of infectious and parasitic animal diseases. The department provides students with both fundamental and applied knowledge in microbiology, virology, biotechnology, epizootology, and parasitology, and offers training programs for Master’s, PhD, and Doctor of Science degrees.

The main priorities of the department include organizing and conducting educational, scientific, and outreach activities at a modern level, researching current issues in veterinary medicine, and implementing innovative technologies in programs aimed at the prevention and eradication of infectious animal diseases.

Priority Areas

The priority areas of the department include:

  • organization and implementation of educational, scientific, methodological, and cultural activities for full-time students and participants of advanced training and retraining programs for specialists in the agro-industrial and environmental sectors, in cooperation with other academic units of the University involved in educational activities;

  • training, retraining, and professional development of specialists in veterinary medicine and academic teaching staff;

  • providing students with fundamental knowledge and applied skills in microbiology, virology, and biotechnology;

  • development, continuous updating, and improvement of the educational and laboratory infrastructure, research methodologies, and technical teaching tools, as well as digitalization and informatization of the educational process in the disciplines of epizootology, infectious diseases, organization of veterinary practice, management, and marketing in veterinary medicine;

  • organization of an educational process aimed at training highly qualified specialists who combine strong general education with professional competence, are broadly educated in global and national culture, possess skills of continuous personal and professional development, individual and teamwork activities, and civic engagement;

  • study of current issues in animal health, quality, and safety of animal products;

  • organization and implementation of innovative, scientific, research, and publishing activities.


Alongside teaching activities, the department’s staff conduct active research focused on the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases of animals, poultry, fish and bees, gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases of newborn animals, and the development and implementation of new antimicrobial agents, biological products and disinfectants.
