Department history

The history of the Department of Physiology of Vertebrate and Pharmacology, which was created on July 1, 2024, should be represented as separate historical essays of the Department of Animal Physiology and the Department of Pharmacology.

The development of physiology at the National University of Bioresources and Environmental Management of Ukraine originates from the Department of Physiology of Agricultural Animals, founded at the Veterinary Faculty of the Kiev Polytechnic Institute, which was organized on September 27, 1920 by decision of the Higher School Management. The organizer and the first head of the Department of Physiology of Agricultural Animals was a scientist with the world name, a prominent Ukrainian physiologist, student Academician IP Pavlov, one of the founders of electrophysiology, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939), Doctor of Medicine, Professor Vasyl Yurievich.
Department of Pharmacology was established in 1922 at the Kiev Veterinary Institute. Medical pharmacologists (professor G.L. Shkavera, P.V. Rodionov) and specialists of other profiles (professor S.Y. Jaroslav, M.P. Vashetko) headed the department and taught a course of pharmacology.
After institute evacuation (1941) in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg) headed of the two separate departments - pharmacology and toxicology became the senior lecturer and later on (1942), PhD (veterinary science) - Sergey V. Bazhenov.
After returning to Kyiv was created the department of pharmacology and toxicology headed by associate professor S.V. Bazhenov. In 1957 the department was merged with the department of pathophysiology under direction of professor M.P. Vashetko.
In 1959 again was reorganized departments, which resulted was created department of pharmacology, pathophysiology and parasitology, to 1979 it was headed by professor S.V. Bazhenov. In 1979 on the proposal of professor Sergey V. Bazhenov head of the department of pharmacology and toxicology was elected associate professor Grygoriy O. Khmelnitsky, today doctor of veterinary Sciences (1981), professor (1982), academician of NAAS of Ukraine (1993), Honored Scientist of Ukraine (since 1998). From 2006 to 2010 headed of the department was associate professor, PhD (veterinary science) N.F. Panko. In 2010 the head of the department of pharmacology and toxicology was elected professor V.B. Duhnytskiy who has headed it until 2020.
