UN days in NULES of Ukraine

27 жовтня 2022 року

October 24 is an important date in the history of international relations. From April 25 to June 26, 1945, the UN International Conference on the creation of an international organization was held in San Francisco. On the last day of the conference, the UN Charter was signed, which entered into force on October 24, 1945, after its ratification by the five permanent members of the Security Council — France, the Republic of China, the USSR, Great Britain and the United States, and a majority of the 46 other parties that also signed this treaty — the charter. According to the decision of the 2nd session of the UN General Assembly, since 1948, October 24 is celebrated as United Nations Day. In 1971, at the 26th session of the General Assembly, this day was declared an international holiday and invited all countries to celebrate it as a public holiday. Every year on this day, the UN secretary-general addresses the international community with a message.

On the base of the faculty of humanities and pedagogy of NULES of Ukraine the department of international relations and social sciences organized a scientific and practical conference "UN in the assessment of international students". The event was joined by instructors, students, postgraduates of the department, students from other faculties. The head of the department of international relations and social sciences, doctor of political sciences, professor  Oleksandr Volodymyrovych Shevchuk, addressed the participants of the event with an introductory speech/ He drew attention to the ambiguity of assessments regarding the activities of the UN at the present stage.

The most difficult issues in the activities of the UN were put forward for discussion by international students and undergraduates (scientific supervisor assoc. professor Kravchenko N. B.): is the UN still effective? (Melnychenko Iryna, MB-19002b), problems of UN reform (Petrova Anastasia, MB-19002b), UN position on the situation at Zaporizhia NPP (Bohdan Oros, MB-19003b), the right of "veto" in the UN: modern challenges (Shcherbyna Sofia, MB-19002b), how to deprive the aggressor of the right of "veto" in the UN Security Council? (Onyshko Mykhailo, MB-19002b). And they did a decent job, set the tone for the conference, supported aspiring speakers, students from other faculties who came to express their public position, and took part in discussions during the conference.

The reports of second-year students, delivered confidently and clearly, with defending their own positions during the discussion, were also relevant (scientific supervisor Assoc. Sekunova Yu. V.) and are devoted to the specifics of the functioning of the UN at the present stage (Buslo Ivanna, MB-21002b), the specifics of the functioning of the UN Secretariat (Kovaliova Sofia, MB-21001b), the role of the United Nations in resolving international conflicts (Didzhyk Kateryna, MB-21001b), Poland-UN cooperation (Nikitina Anastasia, MB-21002b).

The mission of the scientific supervisor assoc. professor, Bulhakova O.V., turned out to be important. She attracted not only international students to participate in the conference (Shchuka Lesya, MB-20002b, "UN peacekeeping activities"), but also the students from the faculty of plant protection, biotechnology and ecology (Kyrylo Chupilin, "Ukraine-co-founder of the United Nations"), faculty of mechanics and technology (Brovarets Mykyta, "Ukraine's cooperation with the UN at the present stage"), who also expressed their position, answered questions during the discussion of their reports, which aroused interest and were warmly received by the audience.

Interesting is the report "the UN mission to hold a referendum in Western Sahara". (Hryshchenko Victoria, MV-19004b, scientific supervisor of the Assoc. Lanovyuk L. P.). Western Sahara is not a member of the UN, it is a disputed territory and, according to the UN, "extremely un-self-governing", is in conflict between Morocco and the Frente Polisario. Currently, there is no clear plan for holding a referendum, and therefore the future fate of the ceasefire remains in doubt. Until 2020, no UN member state recognized anyone's supremacy over Western Sahara. 10. XII.In 2020, the United States announced recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara in exchange for the establishment of relations between Morocco and Israel.
The final speech was made by the head of the department of international relations and social sciences, Dr. of polit. sciences, prof.  Shevchuk Oleksandr Volodymyrovych who highly appreciated the work of the conference and thanked all participants of the conference for their civic position, analytical reports, activity and concern for the cause.
The conference concluded that the UN is still an important international organization. But it needs to be reformed. New times require new approaches.
