Formation of the Department of Plant Physiology initiated during the teaching of plant physiology at the Department of Botany of the agricultural department of the Kiev Polytechnic Institute (KPI) in 1898. Permanent director of the department from 1898 to 1928 was a founder of the Ukrainian School physiologists, a pupil Timiryazev KA - Professor, Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences EP Votchal.
In 1939 at the Agronomy Faculty KPI was established in KSPH Department of Plant Physiology. Under certain modifications in the title: "Plant Physiology and Microbiology", "Plant Physiology and Biochemistry", "Physiology and biochemistry of plant", "Selection and physiology of plants", "Plant Physiology, Virology and Biotechnology of Plants", "physiology, plant ecology and biomonitoring ", Department continues to exist today. Department of Plant Physiology at different time head: Professor AA Kuzmenko (1939-1941), Associate Professor FI Zavgorodniy (1945-1954), Professor I. Tolmachev (1954-1962), Professor S. Lebedev (1962-1980).
The department worked great scientists - Professor O. Tabenska, Cor. AN BSSR IK Malyushytskyy Professor P. Oksiyuk, Cor. SSR A. Okanenko, professor A. Hurmaza. The main focus of work in this period was to study the water regime, the midday depression of photosynthesis, mineral nutrition of crops, frost and plant respiration.
After 1980 the Department from 1 to 5 years ran: Prof. OP Larin, assistant professor D.Y. Lavrentovych Professor SS Maliuta Professor AA Bulah, Sc.D. TV Chuhunkova, Associate MD Melnychuk, Sc.D., NM Rashidov, Sc.D. PM Tsarenko, Sc.D. OA Boiko. Since 2021, the department is managed by Doctor of the Biology, Senior Research Associate Svitlana V. Prylutska.
