The end of the weekly cycle of lectures by Jody Cornell and Carol Kennel from the University of Iowa (USA) at the faculty of Humanities and Pedagogical since

September 8, 2017

The first week of the new academic year at the faculty of Humanities and Pedagogical since marked by a number of outstanding events, among which the daily lectures of professors Jody Cornell and Carol Kinelley from the University of Iowa (USA) took the prominent place. Within five days’ students and teachers of different departments of NULES who speak English have the first opportunity to learn a lot of new useful information about the system of higher education in the United States of America, in particular about the challenges of today, "live" to exchange experiences and compare the urgent educational problems of our country with foreign countries, to learn new methods and approaches to teaching English, etc.

The final lecture by Jody Cornell and Carol Kennel, which was held on September 8, 2017, was devoted to the guests' answers to numerous questions of the audience. Her Jodie Conell began her greetings from students and teachers on the first friday of the school year and wished her a good rest and recruitment for further fruitful work. The first question to the tutors concerned the problems with which they had to encounter during their stay in Ukraine. Responding to him, Jody sincerely admitted that it was a lack of hot water at the university hotel and hostels and expressed hope that the situation would change for the better. Moreover, he noted the improved condition of local roads in comparison with his previous visits to Kyiv. Another observation related to cultural change, namely, the behavior of people in public transport, in particular, in the underground. According to Jody, a few years ago, young people more often gave way to older people, but today, their attention are almost entirely geared towards phones and other gadgets. In turn, Carol Kineli jokingly called her stay like the adventure, and she said that she likes adventures. Carol as mother seriously expressed her concern with the large number of young smokers, she also lost her three sisters and brother through illnesses caused by smoking. As for other things, then here she feels like home.

An unforgettable impression on the audience made the unanimous response of the American guests to the question of how they describe Ukraine: the first words of the state anthem "Ukraine has not died yet". Even without proper knowledge of the Ukrainian language during the listening, there is a frost on the skin, especially if we recall the continuous struggle and fitting of Ukrainian sufferings that continue to this day, especially in the East of Ukraine.

The conversation touched many other, not less interesting themes, for example  differences between UsA and Ukraine in "student-teacher" relations, cultural and linguistic differences between USA and Great Britain, volunteer question and participation of american students in charitable organisations; typical mistakes of ukrainian students while studying English, personal feelings as source of inspiration, or own fears etc.

At the end of the meeting heads of departmens of English filology Natalia Aristova, English language for technical an agrobiological specialities Oksana Ivanova and Romano-Germanic languages and translation Alexander Malykhin on behalf of dean of Humanities and Pedagogical Faculty Vasyl Shynkaruk sincerely thanked Jodie Cornell and Caroll KinelY for informative and content lectures, for fruitful cooperation and friendly attitude, and also expressed hope for an extended partnership. All in all, regular meeting attendees got certificates.
