Are you a professional firefighter? Or one of the hundreds of thousands of volunteers across the EU who give up their time to train and to intervene in dangerous situations? EU action to facilitate firefighters' work and improve safety includes coordinating firefighting activities, standardising equipment, promoting information exchange and supporting training and cross-border cooperation.

Standardisation of equipment boosts firefighters' personal safety. Quality standards have been set for helmets for wildland firefighting and technical rescue. Looking to the future, the EU SMART@FIRE project has encouraged the development of smart technologies for protective suits, allowing automatic transmission of biometric and localisation data to commanding officers.

Fires do not stop at national borders and nor do firefighters. Solidarity and coordination are essential. This is where the EU Civil Protection Mechanism comes in, with its European Emergency Response Coordination Centre to coordinate assistance to disaster-stricken countries. Meanwhile, the European Emergency Response Capacity is a voluntary mechanism that helps countries to pool necessary resources for rapid deployment to a disaster zone. The EU has also set up a European Forest Fire Information System to provide expertise and up-to-date information. When it comes to forest fires, we may think of southern Europe, but there are striking examples in the north too. In July 2018, for instance, EU coordination efforts enabled 7 EU countries plus Norway to come to Sweden's aid, providing firefighters, planes and helicopters.
