European level (education, production, science)
The scientific and pedagogical staff of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Aquatic Bioresources of NULES of Ukraine, together with colleagues from Poltava State Agrarian University, Lviv National University of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology named after S.Z. Hzhytsky, the Association of Milk Producers, the Scientific and Methodological Center for Higher and Professional Higher Education, as well as other institutions, took part in the implementation of the final stage of the project “Sustainable Livestock Production and Animal Welfare” (SULAWE), which took place at the Faculty of Biotechnology of the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia.
The coordinator from the University of Ljubljana, Professor Marija Klopčič, presented the peculiarities of the agricultural sector of Slovenia and the educational and scientific work in animal husbandry.
The university has more than 40,000 undergraduate and graduate students at 23 faculties and 5,600 teachers. Up to 3000 students study at the Biotechnical Faculty and 600 teachers provide the educational process.
The Biotechnical Faculty consists of 9 departments:
1) Agronomy;
2) Biology;
3) Forestry;
4) Landscape Architecture;
5) Forestry and Woodworking;
6) Animal Sciences;
7) Food Science and Technology;
8) Microbiology;
9) Biotechnology.
The Department of Animal Sciences consists of 5 departments: 1) Animal Sciences; 2) Genetics, Biotechnology and Animal Immunology; 3) Nutrition; 4) Dairy (+ Institute of Dairy and Probiotics); 5) Agricultural Economics, Policy and Legislation.
Further acquaintance with the work of the faculty took place at its production and experimental base. The teachers visited a farm that breeds the autochthonous Krškopolje pig breed, photo 2. The breed is adapted to local mountainous conditions and is in demand among local farmers. The visit to the robotic milk production farm, where the main production processes (milking, feed distribution) are automated, was of interest.
Prof. Mojca Simčič demonstrated the entire system of work in sheep breeding on the example of the Jezersko-Solčava breed, from measuring economically useful traits to genomic evaluation. In addition, Ukrainian specialists got acquainted with the system of work on the Limousin meat breed, which is on pasture most of the year.
All scientific and teaching work of the Faculty of Biotechnology is provided with modern laboratory facilities, which allows for the implementation of research projects in the following areas:
1) nutrition and microbial ecology of the gut; 2) comparative genomics and genomic biodiversity; 3) competitiveness of the agri-food industry; 4) animal health, environment and safe food.
Acquaintance with the Faculty of Biotechnology of the University of Ljubljana will facilitate further cooperation with the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Aquatic Bioresources of the National University of Life Sciences of Ukraine.
