With the beginning of the new semester, a new stage in the work of the students of the club (https://nubip.edu.ua/node/153834) has come. Studying the disciplines “Animal Biochemistry with the Basics of Physical and Colloidal Chemistry” and “Biochemical Processes of the Cell”, among which the first is a mandatory component of the Veterinary Medicine (211; Master's degree) program, and the second is an elective.
“Animal Biochemistry with Fundamentals of Physical and Colloidal Chemistry” provides basic concepts of the chemical composition of the animal body, classification, functions of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, minerals, vitamins, enzymes, and hormones. The main pathways of biochemical processes that ensure homeostasis, energy balance, growth and development of the animal body are studied. Significant attention is paid to the study of the biochemical composition of biological fluids and tissues of the animal body and the processes that occur in them.
Biochemical Processes of the Cell is an elective discipline of the Veterinary Medicine educational program, which provides basic concepts of the chemical composition of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, the role of substances such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, enzymes, hormones and minerals in biochemical processes at the cellular and subcellular levels. Particular attention is focused on the structure of cell membranes, intracellular organelles, cytoskeleton and mitochondria, and mechanisms of intracellular/intercellular signal transduction and intercellular interaction. Intracellular signal transduction occurs within the cell and is a signaling chain that occurs in response to intracellular and extracellular stimuli. Intracellular signaling controls all cellular functions, including metabolism, cell division activity, morphology, and the transcription program. Intercellular signal transduction is essential for cell differentiation, organismal development, and sensory information processing.
According to the curriculum of the main discipline, students will soon study such regulators of metabolic processes as hormones. Therefore, the attention of today's extended meeting of the club was focused on the practical part of the research: 1) a detailed acquaintance with the conditions of experiments in educational laboratories, equipment, and theoretical foundations of biochemical research, and 2) an analysis of the latest scientific news (ScienceDaily (https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2025/02/250210132401.htm, “New treatment approach may quickly cure common cause of high blood pressure”, February 10, 2025), which touch on hormone-related pathological abnormalities. A report on a revolutionary new therapy called Targeted Thermal Therapy (TripelT), which offers a safer and faster alternative to surgery for patients with high blood pressure caused by a hormonal disorder called primary aldosteronism, is presented. The successful trial of the promising study is called FABULAS. The name is an acronym for a feasibility study of radiofrequency endoscopic ablation under ultrasound guidance as a non-surgical treatment for aldosterone-producing adenomas while protecting the adrenal glands. FABULAS tested Triple T in 28 patients with primary aldosteronism whose molecular scans revealed a hormone-producing nodule in the left adrenal gland. The new procedure proved to be safe and effective, as most patients had normal hormone levels after six months. Many participants were able to stop taking all blood pressure medications without recurrence of the disease... Good luck to the club members and all students - future specialists of veterinary medicine, in learning and studying everything new!
