The National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine hosted the Vth National Coordination Meeting on Prevention and Safe Suppression of Wildfires in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone
Within the framework of implementation of the technical assistance project of the US Forest Service in Ukraine and the instructions of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 31631/1 / 1-16 dated September 8, 2016 and No. 2233/1 / 1-17 dated January 30, 2017, the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine coordinates measures to improve the forest fire protection system in the exclusion zone. Within the framework of this project, on February 19-20, 2018, the Vth National Coordination Meeting on Prevention and Safe Suppression of Wildfires in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone was held on the basis of the National Forestry and Landscape Management Institute of NUBiP of Ukraine.
Representatives of key ministries, departments and enterprises whose activities are related to the exclusion zone took part in the meeting; in particular representatives of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, the Ministry Of Interior Of Ukraine, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine, the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the State Specialized Enterprise "EcoCenter", the State Specialized Enterprise "Northern Pushcha", the Kyiv Oblast and Kyiv Forestry and Hunting Management, the State Enterprise "TsOTIZ", the State Specialized Enterprise " Chornobyl spetskombinat ", representatives of scientific organizations - the National University of Civil Protection of Ukraine, the Lviv State University of Life Safety, Cherkasy Institute of Fire Safety named after Chornobyl Heroes, the Ukrainian Research Institute of Civil Protection and National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine. In addition, foreign experts from the US Forest Service - Joe Reinarz, Jennifer Jones, Michael Williams and international program coordinator from the US Forest Service Petro Pavlichenko - attended the meeting. In total 50 people attended the meeting.
During the meeting participants discussed the issues of the previous coordination meetings results and defining further actions aimed at improving the system of forest fire prevention and extinguishing in the exclusion zone. The main issues for the meeting were: the staff radiation safety during suppression of forest fires; necessity of amendments to legislative documents and normative acts; implementation of the developed joint order of the Ministry Of Interior Of Ukraine and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine with regard to the approval of the instruction on suppressing of forest fires in the exclusion zone and the zone of mandatory (unconditional) resettlement; interagency interaction during suppression of major forest fires (emergencies) in the exclusion zone; forest protection from fires in the conditions of changing the legal status of the exclusion zone territory to the nature reserve fund of Ukraine, etc.
According to the results of the meeting, a draft decision was formed, which will be further elaborated in accordance with the proposals and comments submitted by March 4, 2018, and sent to the appropriate decision-making bodies.
