June 21, 2016

Breeding belongs to one of the basic components of a successful livestock development, and the existence of modern agricultural enterprises is impossible to imagine without the presence of high-performance genetic resources. Ukraine has always been famous for its high breeding potential of animals and national legal framework was formed for its development. However, with the deepening of international trade and increase the intensity of the exchange of genetic material, questions arose on revision of certain provisions of current legislation for its approach to world criteria, especially for modern breeding practices in the EU.

To get acquainted with the system of breeding in the European Community and defining the role of higher educational institutions in training the corresponding specialists, the Delegation of Ukrainian experts consisting of Dean of the Department of Livestock and Aquatic Biological Resources of NULES of Ukraine Vadym Kondratyuk, Head of the Chair of Animal Genetics, Breeding and Biotechnology Andriy Hetya and Director of State Agency “Research and Methodology center of information and analytical support of higher educational institutions “Ahroosvita”. Tetyana Ishchenko made a study visit to Italian Republic. The trip took place under TAIEX grant program.

The delegation got acquainted with the legislative support of breeding operations in Italy, as well as with the activities of specialized non-governmental associations, including Italian Association of Breeding Stock (AIA) and National Association of Medical and Veterinary Doctors of Italy (ANMVI).
During the visit, the Delegation was accompanied by Vice-President of ANMVI, Mr. G. Belluzzi, who provided an opportunity to get acquainted with the work of dairy farms, pig farms and a factory that produce famous cheese “Grana Padano” and slaughterhouse, specializing in slaughtering pigs for producing a prosciutto ham.

The sides agreed on further cooperation and exchange of information on improving the state of breeding legislation in both countries.
