Exchange of experience with international partners to improve the quality of the educational process at the faculty of animal husbandry and aquatic bioresources
February 3, 2025
The implementation of international projects, which are carried out at the faculty of animal husbandry and aquatic bioresources, opens up unique opportunities for the exchange of experience and best practices, which helps to improve the quality of the educational process and research.
The academic staff of the faculty of animal husbandry and aquatic bioresources, headed by dean Ruslan KONONENKO and the heads of the departments, are constantly working to improve the curriculum for higher education students, work programs of disciplines, improve pedagogical skills and use modern teaching methods in their teaching. One of them is the flipped classroom methodology.
In order to master this teaching method, gain practical skills in its implementation, and gain experience within the framework of the LEARNSAVE project (Learning under attacks — sustainable education at risk in Ukrainian universities) funded by the Swedish Institute, from January 20 to 24, 2025, at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, city of Uppsala (SLU) organized internships for teachers of the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, Poltava State Agrarian University, Odesa State Agrarian University and Tavria State Agrotechnological University names after D. Motornyi. From NUBiP of Ukraine Taras YAKUBETS, senior lecturer at the department of genetics, breeding and animal biotechnology, and Mykhailo MATVEEV, senior lecturer at the department of milk and meat production technologies, participated in the internship.

The interesting and intense internship program included both theoretical training and practical tasks. The first day was devoted to introducing the participants and trainers, who were representatives of the SLU education development department Alexandra D´URSO and Minha PARK, preparing materials for creating video lectures and considering theoretical issues of using the flipped classroom in the educational process.

During the second day of the internship, the teachers had the opportunity to learn about the practical experience of using «flipped classroom» in teaching, as as an interesting presentation was made by Dr. Galia ZAMARATSKA, LEARNSAVE project coordinator, professor at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Her presentation sparked a lively discussion that resulted in constructive conclusions for all project participants.
During the second part of the day, the participants received a practical assignment to get acquainted with modern tools for creating video lectures.

The next day, the internship participants learned about e-learning design strategies, digital tools and systems for online teaching and learning, and digital assessment of students' learning outcomes. These materials were presented by Minha PARK and Cecilia ALMLÖV, employees of the SLU education development department. After that, the teachers visited a professional video studio operating at SLU, and Markus MILLARD, an employee of the studio, spoke about the opportunities for teachers to create video lectures, podcasts, and interviews that are actively used in the educational process.

The fourth day of the internship was very intense, as the participants listened to an interesting lecture by SLU Malte B. RÖDL, who very thoroughly covered the use of artificial intelligence in education. The speaker focused on several key aspects of this issue, including control over the use of AI services, critical analysis of the results synthesized by artificial intelligence, and development of clear principles of AI use in the educational environment. Mr. RÖDL'S presentation sparked an active discussion among the participants and lecturers of the training, during which various aspects and approaches to regulating the implementation of AI in the educational process were discussed.
After a lively discussion, the training participants moved to the video recording studio, where Markus MILLARD was waiting for them. Here, each teacher had the opportunity to record his or her own video presentation of the course. It was an interesting and useful experience for the teachers, as they will need such materials to create their own video lectures.

The final day of the internship began with a lecture by Alexandra D´URSO, who is an education development specialist. The speaker presented universal design for e-learning to the training participants, shared her practical experience in developing work programs and e-courses, and using modern digital tools to prepare interesting educational materials.
After that, each teacher presented the results of the assignment they had received from the course trainers. It consisted of creating one's own video lecture using the ScreenPal program. All participants completed the task, and the trainers highly appreciated the acquisition of competence in creating modern teaching materials.
The final discussion focused on learning outcomes, the specifics of implementing the flipped classroom methodology, taking into account individual approaches to learning and teaching, the specifics of academic disciplines, etc. The project's experienced trainers shared their impressions of the high level of training of Ukrainian teachers, their activity and dedication to improving the educational process.

The internship at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences was extremely interesting and useful for teachers of all universities, as it allowed them to gain valuable experience in using interactive teaching methods, AI in education, and e-course development, which will help improve the educational process and increase the quality of education.
We express our sincere gratitude to the rector and rectorate of NUBiP of Ukraine, LEARNSAVE project coordinators Natalia HRYSHCHENKO and Galia ZAMARATSKA for the opportunity to participate in this project, as well as to the trainers Alexandra D´URSO and Minha PARK for the high level of organization, interesting and useful classes and support for the development of education in Ukraine!
