In the distance format on August 28, 2024, the professor of the Department of Biochemistry named after Acad. Lilia Hryhorivna Kalachniuk of M.F. Guly gave an open lecture at a high professional and methodological level on the subject "Biochemistry of animals with the basics of physical and colloid chemistry" on the topic "Basics of physical chemistry (1): Subject and methods of physical chemistry. The value of pH for the body. pH scale" in English (Basics of physical chemistry (1): Subject and methods of physical chemistry.pH value for the organism. pH scale) to second-year students (8 groups) of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (specialty 211 "Veterinary Medicine", OC "Master's").

The lecturer skillfully maintained the audience's interest throughout the lesson. The lecture material was presented in an accessible form and in a logical sequence, high-quality and understandable for students, and at a good pace.

L.G. Kalachniuk was given the subject and methods of physical chemistry, in particular, pH, its value for the body, the pH scale. The pH scale measures how acidic or alkaline a substance is. The scale ranges from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is neutral. A pH less than 7 is acidic and a pH greater than 7 is basic. Clean water is neutral, with a pH of 7.0. When chemicals are mixed with water, the mixture can become acidic or alkaline. Vinegar and lemon juice are acidic, while washing powders and ammonia are alkaline. What do the numbers mean? Each full pH value is ten times higher than the next outer or more extreme value. For example, pH 4 is ten times more acidic than pH 5. pH 9 is ten times more alkaline (or "alkaline") than pH 8. Along with this, buffer solutions, their components, and blood buffer systems were considered.

According to the students, the information about blood buffer systems and the importance of learning biochemical terms in the educational process was particularly interesting.

The students were briefly introduced to the web pages of the department, the scientific achievements of teachers and the possibilities of using information resources during the educational process (especially electronic training courses), and were also informed about the possibility of joining the student scientific circle "Study of molecular biological mechanisms of metabolism regulation with in-depth studying English biochemical terminology" (led by a lecturer) and prospects for choosing the direction of student scientific activity.
