International Conference Dedicated to Three Anniversaries

September 16, 2014

The International Scientific and Practical Conference “Fruit-growing and Vegetable Farming: Education, Science, Innovation” was held at the Education and Research Institute of Plant Science, Environment and Biotechnologies on September 15, 2014. It is dedicated to several remarkable events — the 20th anniversary of Professor V.L. Symyrenko Department of Horticulture, the 20th anniversary of the Department of Vegetable Farming, and the 15th anniversary of the Department of Greenhouses.

The conference was attended by the representative delegation from Krakow Agricultural University, headed by the Dean of the Department of Horticulture and Biotechnologies, Stanislaw Mazur. It was a return visit. The representatives of the Education and Research Institute of Plant Science, Environment and Biotechnologies visited Krakow in May 2014.

In the opening speech the Head of the University, Stanislav Nikolayenko, noted that the conference had become another step in strengthening international cooperation between the universities, and such ties should be promoted.

The Head of the University said, “There is a war in the eastern part of Ukraine. People die. But we still talk about the future, and this is symbolical. The conference reverberates the ideas discussed in the world.” Stanislav Nikolayenko presented two vectors of the university development and outlined the program “Golosiivska Initiative — 2020”. He once again reminded about the main objectives of the university: to be among top five universities of Ukraine, expand international relations and represent Ukrainian nation.

Among the presenters of reports at the plenary sessions were Associate Professor of Professor B.V. Lesyk Department of Technologies of Storage, Processing and Standardization of Agricultural Products, Volodymyr Zavgorodniy (“Training of specialists in fruit-growing and viticulture at NULES of Ukraine”), Deputy Academician-Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Food Supply of the NAAS of Ukraine, Professor Volodymyr Khareba (“State and prospects of vegetable farming development in Ukraine”), Professor of the Department of Vegetable Farming, Zenoviy Sych (“New cultures in vegetable business”), Professor of Professor M.P. Dyadechko Department of Entomology, Vitaliy Fedorenko (“Problems and prospects of entomological research in Ukraine”), Assistant Professor of the Department of Ecobiotechnologies and Biodiversity, Artur Likhanov (“Biotechnological approaches to conservation and efficient use of high-productive varieties of raspberries from the collection fund of NULES of Ukraine”), Assistant Professor of the Department of Ecobiotechnologies and Biodiversity, Julia Kolomiyets (“Cell breeding of tomatoes resistant to bacterial diseases”). Professor Volodymyr Mezhenskyy reported about the research of Professor V.L. Symyrenko Department of Horticulture and Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Mykhaylo Retman, informed about major fungal diseases of crops. Associate Professor Olexander Tsyzya outlined current state of affairs in mushroom growing and Associate Professor Olexander Shemetun dwelled on the achievements of the Department of Greenhouses and on the trends and prospects of the development of vegetable farming in greenhouses.

The scientists of V.A. Nestervodskyy Department of Beekeeping also presented a few reports. The Head of the Department, Valeriy Brovarskyy, delivered the report “Quality of cerago obtained by different technologies”. His colleagues — Professor Viktor Polishchuk, Associate Professor Oleksiy Losev and Associate Professor Igor Goloviychuk — presented the report “Conveyor of plant blossoming and pollination activity of bees in forest steppes of Ukraine”.

Polish counterparts also presented their developments. Jacek Nawrocki and Stanislaw Mazur outlined modern problems of protecting vegetables from diseases in Poland, and Jan Blaschyk dwelled on the influence of different storage conditions on the quality and characteristics of two varieties of black currant.

It is planned to sign an additional agreement between the Education and Research Institute of Plant Science, Environment and Biotechnologies of NULES of Ukraine and the Department of Horticulture and Biotechnologies of Krakow Agricultural University on September 16, 2014. Such agreements strengthen cooperation between partner universities of NULES of Ukraine. Currently the university signed about 50 agreements on cooperation with various foreign institutions.
