WORKSHOP AT THE CENTER OF AQUATIC BIORESOURCES AND AQUACULTURE

May 4, 2022

The "Centre for Aquatic Bioresources and Aquaculture" hosted a master class that brought together amateurs and young people interested in studying the water bodies inhabitants. Particularly, specialty 207 "Aquatic Bioresources and Aquaculture" is designed to provide in-depth knowledge and practical skills of modern aquaculture trends in reproduction and cultivation of various species of fish and other organisms, studying different types of aquatic ecosystems, water quality, biological processes, modern trends in ornamental bioresources, commercial fishing and their preservation, etc.

Participants of the master class had the opportunity to get acquainted with modern devices (multifunction device Operatijn manual IP 67 combo, photocolorimeter Ecotest) and conduct rapid research to determine temperature, clarity, electrical conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen content, total mineralization in aquarium water populated by aquarium water fish and compare them with the normalized values of water quality according to standards.

In addition, the world of the smallest inhabitants of natural waters interested all participants without exception. Under the guidance of the teacher, the guests made live plankton smears of a - the food base of fish and examined them under a microscope. Of course, this work is extremely painstaking and requires certain skills, but the desire to look out of the corner of the eye into the unknown microscopic world and perseverance rewards the curious and somewhat deflects the veil of mystery of the water kingdom. And we already see and identify some of the most common species of the family Daphnia and Moina, there are also Cyclops.

It was extremely interesting to determine the fish gender and the presence or absence of parasites in the fish cavity with a modern ultrasound device.

Workshop participants had the opportunity to get acquainted with the fish fauna species diversity of our reservoirs in the ichthyological laboratory. Visitors used determinants and laboratory equipment to determine species.

Aquaristics popularity has grown sharply in recent years. This is an extraordinary world that fascinates with its diversity. The main role here is played by technologies and methods of cultivation of ornamental aquatic organisms. Participants contributed their own food for aquatic decorative objects giant Gippsland earthworms, rotifers, chlorella, wingless fruit flies, etc.) that will continue to be the starting food for ornamental fish and other aquatic organisms. Participants contributed their own food for aquatic decorative objects.

Visitors to the master class were also interested in a meeting with aquaponics, where fish and lettuce are grown together. This is an extremely promising and modern technology that will soon win over its supporters and become a full-fledged component of aquaculture.

In addition to the workshop, the visitors were shown the educational and scientific film that expands the knowledge and understanding of biota in water bodies.
