Liliia Kalachniuk received higher education in Biochemistry. During studying at the Faculty of Biology of Ivan Franko Lviv State University, her diploma work was awarded the Diploma of the first degree at the interuniversity competition of diploma works of the USSR (1983-1984). In 1989, at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the National Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, she defended her candidate (Ph.D.) thesis «Structure of tRNASer1 from bovine liver and its interaction with aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases» (in the specialty 03.00.03 - Molecular Biology). In 2009, at the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, she defended her doctoral dissertation «Molecular aspects of exogenous regulation of metabolism in cells of microorganisms-symbionts and host animal» (in the specialty 03.00.04 - Biochemistry); in 2013, she received the academic title of associate professor. Liliia Kalachniuk became a laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology for a series of scientific papers «Mechanisms of the functioning of the digestive system» in 2012. In 2014, she was elected the Academician of Higher Education Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (now the National Academy of Sciences of Higher Education of Ukraine).
Since 2016, Liliia Kalachniuk has been acting as the head of the RCP «Climate action, resource efficiency, and raw materials» and since 2017 - the head of the NCP «Food Security, Sustainable Agriculture, Marine and Maritime Research and the Bio-Economy & Biotechnology» of the Work Program «Horizon 2020» based on NULES of Ukraine. In 2017-2019, she was an active participant in the international project «BioHorizon» (R&I project № 652637 of the Horizon 2020 program). 2017 - 2020, she has been appointed Deputy Director of the Research Institute of Animal Health for Information and Innovation work. In 2017-2018, she was a fellow grantee of the project «Innovative University and Leadership. Phase III: Innovation and Relations with the Environment» (Warsaw's - Jagiellonian Universities, Republic of Poland) and author of the micro-project «Information base for the «Center of Excellence» as a model for building a dynamic structure of relations with main stakeholders in Ukrainian higher education».
The main scientific results of prof. Liliia Kalachniuk was obtained in the following areas: elucidation of the role of its individual participants, including RsgA-protein, in the processes of translation and trans-translation on the model of functioning of the ribosomal apparatus of the Escherichia coli cell; study of the role of extracellular redox potential (Eh) in the metabolism of populations of symbiont microorganisms and their individual species for possible use in the regulation of nutrient uptake; molecular biochemical studies of exogenous regulation of metabolism in cells of symbiont microorganisms and host animals involved in digestive processes; detection of the existence of additional enzymatic reactions on the ways of assimilation of carbon and ammonium nitrogen by rumen microorganisms and the possibility of their correction by exogenous factors; research of possibilities of regulation of metabolic processes in the digestive tract by hexosans and sorbents; research to solve the problem of feed protein deficiency in animal husbandry through the use of rapeseed feed additives; study of the inhibitory effect of pentachlorophenol on biochemical processes in the cells of microorganisms-symbionts of the digestive tract of animals against the background of various factors and the possibility of effective use of existing intracellular metabolic pathways and ways to reduce the toxicity of biocides in the body; study of changes in the structural and functional state of calf liver cells in dyspepsia and search for effective ways to correct them; study of the influence of exogenous factors on metabolic processes in animals under conditions of pathological disorders of the liver, kidneys, etc.
In the department, since 2010, L. Kalachniuk teaches students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine disciplines «Biochemistry of animals with the basics of physical and colloid chemistry» (in Ukrainian and English) and «Special biochemistry», and postgraduate students of PhD-program of Biology – «Research methods and organization of dissertation work preparation», «New tendencies in biological research of bioresources (scientific seminars)», «Molecular mechanisms of metabolism regulation», «Physic-chemical methods of biochemical research», «Blood biochemistry», «The latest methods in biological research».
Studying mechanisms of regulation of metabolism in an organism of animals at actions of factors of different nature.
Under her scientific guidance, the dissertation "Changes in the activity of marker enzymes in the blood and organs of animals under the action of exogenous factors" (for obtaining a degree of candidate sciences in the specialty 03.00.04 - Biochemistry) has been successfully defended by I. Basarab and 6 master's theses. Currently, under her supervising and advising, postgraduate and doctoral students are training in the specialty "Biology" (direction "Biochemistry").
She is also a supervisor of scientific student group «Study of molecular biological mechanisms of metabolism regulation with in-depth studying English biochemical terminology» (since 2011), the successful operation of which is the victory at the «Festival of Student Science – 2014» in NULES of Ukraine and the Diploma of the I degree and 60 publications with the participation of students, whose works at international forums were awarded 13 Diplomas of the I degree (3), II degree (6), III degree (4), 7 Diplomas for the best report (6) and for active participation (1) and the Certificate «Inventor's Day».
Liliia Kalachniuk is a guarantor of the «Biology (091)» educational and scientific program (PhD-program) at NULES of Ukraine and head of research projects (research work under the contract №110/15-pr-2020 «Development of ways and means of regulation of metabolism in an organism of animals at actions of factors of different nature», State Registration number 0120U102130, 2020-2022; initiative research topic «Mechanisms of regulation of protein metabolic processes in animals under the action of endogenous and exogenous factors», State Registration number 0116U001883, 2016-2020)», and is a participant in the international project «Student’s eating habits and susceptibility to stress during social isolation caused by COVID-19» (from May 2020) and was the executor of national projects «Study of molecular mechanisms of regulation of metabolic processes and productive functions of animals», state registration number 0117U001252, 2017-2019, «Scientific substantiation and creation of medicines based on Ferrum (IV) for veterinary medicine» state registration number 0119U100817, 2019-2021; «Development of a system for supervision rabies of animals by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Innovative Biosensors Test (SPR)» state registration number 0119U100820, 2019-2021).
