The Major Achievements of the University in 2013
- More than 40 thousand students study at NULES of Ukraine (among them 17 thousand study at the basic institution of the University and approximately 8 thousand – at the Southern Affiliate of NULES of Ukraine «Crimean Agrotechnological University» and other separated subdivisions located in the Crimea).
- Training of specialists at NULES of Ukraine is conducted in accordance with the degree system (Regulations “On the education and qualification levels (degree education)”) that provides opportunities for satisfying educational needs, increases flexibility of training and raises the level of social protection under changing labour market conditions. This system is based on relevant educational and vocational programs and ensures obtaining relevant qualification providing possibilities for its extension and retraining.
- In 2011-2013 the number of specialities offered for training of master students increased from 43 to 47 (including 10 specialities for master students at the Southern Affiliate of NULES of Ukraine «Crimean Agrotechnological University»).
- The basic institution offers tuition majorly in English for 15 specialities. Training in English is conducted in 50 academic groups of master students.
- NULES of Ukraine participated in the international tournament in quality among countries of Central and Eastern Europe (Field: Training and Research). The international commission announced the University the winner in the category “Large enterprises”.
- In 2012 the basic institution successfully passed the certification audit for compliance with the international quality standard ISO 9001:2008 and received the appropriate certificate; in April 2013 the first compliance audit was conducted at the University as the quality management system requires annual verification of proper functioning of the system and its improvement.
- 83 university students participated in the second phase of All-Ukrainian Student Competition in 2012-2013 academic year, 11 of them won.
- In 2013 the number of specialities for master students increased to 47 (in 2012 there were 44 specialities, in 2011 – 43, in 2010 – 42, in 2009 – 40, in 2008 – 38).
- In 2013 the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine accredited NULES of Ukraine as the higher education establishment of the IV level until 2023. In addition, 4 new specialties for master students were licensed (“Hunting”, “Industrial and civil construction”, “Translation”, “Computer ecological- economic monitoring”) and 32 specialities for training of bachelors, specialists, and masters were re-accredited.
- Main direction of international cooperation of the University is to promote participation of students in international master's programs with the possibility of obtaining a double diploma – of NULES of Ukraine and of foreign partner university.
- 39 students of NULES of Ukraine took part in master's programs with the ability to obtain double diplomas of partner universities in Germany, the Netherlands and Japan.
- The University continues training of master students majoring in applied biology (speciality “Laboratory Work”) for employment in the relevant sectors of the economy of Ukraine. Graduate students majoring in Methods of Biochemical Research (speciality “Laboratory Work”) have the possibility to undergo training at the Ukrainian Laboratory of Quality and Safety of Agricultural Products and obtain the certificates verifying their training.
- In December 2013 master students (29 people), who studied in accordance with master’s programs for training of expert-analysts, graduated from the University.
- In order to ensure further employment of the graduates, the University introduced a unique system of employment (since 2010). The University together with an employer and a master student sign a tripartite agreement which imparts the students with the possibility to choose a working place. The University together with the future employer choose the most suitable master’s programme and the topic of the master thesis which will allow the student to prepare for the job. In 2013 this system made it possible to employ almost 1.5 thousand graduates (including over 270 graduates from the Southern Affiliate of NULES of Ukraine «Crimean Agrotechnological University»), whose training was paid by the government.
- 4240 people extended their qualification by taking courses at the Education and Research Institute of Postgraduate Education, including 1351 civil servants, 868 managers and workers of state enterprises, institutions and organizations, 980 managers and workers of agricultural enterprises, 1041 scientific and teaching workers of agrarian universities of I-IV accreditation levels and teachers of agrarian colleges.
- The University offers the master’s program for civil servants – “Public Service”. At the moment 194 people participate in this program (full-time and part-time training).
- During 2012/2013 academic year 648 3-year students and 429 – 4-year students of different faculties underwent military training. The training was conducted in 6 military specialties.
- Scientific and pedagogical staff of NULES of Ukraine (including scientific and pedagogical staff of the Southern Affiliate of NULES of Ukraine «Crimean Agrotechnological University») prepared and published 62 textbooks, 219 manuals, 2466 methodological papers.
- Education and Research Centre For Educational Activities and Social Development, in particular, the Department of Educational Activities and Student Affairs, together with the subdivisions of the Educational and Research Centre of Culture and Education, the Department of Cultural Studies, the Department of Physical Education, and student self-government organisations organize and coordinate educational work of the University.
- The Department of Cultural Studies participates in improvement of the educational process. The staff of the Department organized the work of numerous clubs, studios and circles, whose meetings take place throughout the year. All events organized by the Department of Cultural Studies, in cooperation with other departments of NULES of Ukraine, aim at improving upbringing, erudition, culture, and behaviour of young people. Approximately 1,350 students and teachers of the basic institution and more than 800 students and teachers of regional higher education establishments of I-IV accreditation levels participated in XXXIII International Art Festival “Holosiivska Spring – 2013”. The jury announced more than 200 winners of the Festival.
- Sports activities are conducted at the University by the Department of Physical Education together with the Student Organization and Trade Union of NULES of Ukraine under the guidance of the Education and Research Centre for Educational Activities and Social Development. Students and teachers are involved in physical education and sports. In 2012-2013 academic year the University conducted sports and athletics meeting. 810 students participated in 12 competitions among the teams from the education and research institutes of the University.
- 126 university students received state allowance as of January 1, 2014. In 2013 students who are orphans received UAH 2,812,475 while excellent students were allocated UAH 800,000.
- The University lays emphasis on practical training of students as a quintessential part of the educational process. The number of places for practical training in 2013 amounted to 2254 (including 1325 leading enterprises of the basic institution). 8124 students underwent practical training in 2013. Among them 5839 students had training at university education, scientific and innovation departments and separated subdivisions.
- University scientists conduct theoretical and applied research in the fields of plant biology, animal biotechnology, chemistry, applied mechanics and physics, ecology, economics, education, etc.
- Many university scientists received governmental awards for the successful research.
- National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine was included into the State Register of Scientific Institutions supported by the state.
- The University Science Park “Sustainable Environmental Management and Life Quality” was created in order to promote scientific, technological and innovative activities, effectively and efficiently use available scientific potential and resources, commercialize and implement scientific developments at national and foreign markets. Its founders were National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine and Frunze Training and Experimental Breeding Poultry Plant State Enterprise. The University Science Park cooperates with such well-known companies as Amaco, John Deer Ukraina, Research Institute of Agricultural and Food Policy of the University of Missouri, Pioneer Hi-Bred Int'l Inc, Carmac Croup SRL (Italy), National Centre for Agricultural and Food Policy of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Kozyrnaya Karta LLC (Ukraine) and others.
- University scientists conducted research at the expense of the state budget allocated by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and research commissioned by the State Agency of Ukraine for Science, Innovation and Informatization as well as in accordance with contracts with private organizations and farms.
- University scientists received UAH 18,000 from the State Budget of Ukraine and UAH 6,054 from the Ukrainian Laboratory of Quality and Safety of Agricultural Products for research activities. The State Agency of Ukraine for Science, Innovation and Informatization allocated UAH 345,000 (including the Grant of the President of Ukraine amounting to UAH 60,000) for scientific research conducted by university scientists.
- In 2013 university scientists developed 96 new technologies and technological processes; 83 new types of equipment; 12 vaccines, serums, and drugs; 2 varieties of crops; 37 chemicals. 54 developments were implemented into production and 104 recommendations were sent for replication by the ministries and departments of Ukraine.
- The University occupies a leading position among the institutions with the highest inventive activity. In 2013 university scientists submitted 249 applications for protection of industrial property, copyright and related rights, patents and certificates for plant varieties to the State Intellectual Property Service of Ukraine. As a result, 259 patents were granted, among which 96 patents for new technologies and processes, 83 – for new types of equipment and machines, 37 – for chemical substances, 4 – for veterinary preparations and substances for plant protection.
- 19 specialized scientific councils function at NULES of Ukraine. Among them there are 15 doctoral scientific councils and 3 candidate scientific councils for 46 specialities at the basic institution and 1 candidate scientific council for 1 speciality at the Southern Affiliate of NULES of Ukraine «Crimean Agrotechnological University». Training of scientific and scientific- pedagogical staff is conducted through postgraduate studies (80 specialities) and doctoral studies (64 specialties). As of January 1, 2014 there are 610 graduate students in the graduate school of the University, including 357 people undergoing off-the-job training and 253 people undergoing on-the-job training. 155 people graduated from the graduate school in 2013, including 68 people who approbated, submitted and defended their theses on time and 9 people who defended their theses ahead of schedule. In total, 117 candidate theses were defended during 2013. The amount of doctorate students in 2013 was 26 people. In 2013, 7 people graduated from the doctoral school. Two of them defended their theses ahead of schedule and two people approbated their papers (28, 6%). 19 university employees obtained doctoral degree in 2013.
- The University issues 26 scientific publications, 18 of them are professionally-oriented.
- The University published 261monographs, 136 reference books, dictionaries and brochures, 3381 articles (including 717 articles in international scientific journals), and 2286 report theses.
- Innovative products are displayed at the university teaching and exhibition halls, the permanent exhibition of scientific achievements of the university and other exhibitions. Scientific developments of university scientists were exhibited at 12 international and 1 All-Ukrainian exhibitions and their scientific achievements were awarded with 51 medals and more than 1,000 diplomas.
- National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine won eleven gold medals, 342 diplomas and 5 commendations for demonstration of scientific achievements in the competition for the best products, technologies, scientific developments and services, which was held as a part of the XXV International Exhibition “AGRO -2013”.
- The state highly appreciated the contribution of university scientists in the development of agricultural science and education: many of them received government awards.
- In August 2013 NULES of Ukraine was rated among top five universities in Ukraine in Webometrics Ranking (in 2012 the University occupied the 28th place). The University has 2180th place in the total ranking of all world higher education establishments (compared to 3996th in 2012). In accordance with the indicators of the scientometric database Scopus the University occupies 27th position among other 115 Ukrainian higher education establishments (compared to 33rd in 2012).
- Access to information and educational resources is provided by telecommunication infrastructure of the University.
- 813 teachers, researchers and students of NULES of Ukraine took part in various international events (including training , training , training and production practice);
- NULES of Ukraine organized and hosted 50 international events (conferences, seminars, workshops).
- The University cooperates with 145 institutions in 34 countries.
- 131 students of NULES of Ukraine represented the University and the country in international events in 16 countries. 70 students visited foreign institutions in 13 countries for training. 362 students underwent practical training at leading agricultural enterprises of 12 countries. 258 teachers and researchers of NULES of Ukraine visited foreign institutions to enhance cooperation and to represent the University in international events in 39 countries. 37 teachers visited foreign institutions in 12 countries for training, education and research.
- The University hosted 406 teachers and researchers from 30 countries, as well as official delegations from Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Belarus, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Georgia, Denmark, Estonia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Canada, China, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, the USA, Turkey, Hungary, France, Switzerland, Sweden, and Japan.
- 37 agreements on international cooperation were signed.
- The University organised and conducted 85 conferences, 75 national and university conferences and seminars. One of the most prominent events was the International Scientific Conference “Earth Bioresources and Environmental Biosafety: Challenges and Opportunities”, dedicated to the 115th anniversary of NULES of Ukraine and the 15th anniversary of GCHERA. The Conference was hosted by the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine with the support of the Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations for Agricultural and Life Sciences (GCHERA), Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), Iowa State University of Science and Technology (USA), Humboldt University in Berlin (Germany) and other universities and organizations. The University also organised the II International Scientific and Practical Conference of Young Scientists “Burning Issues of Life Sciences and Environmental Resources Management”, which presented scientific developments and achievements of young scientists in various fields of agricultural and environmental sectors. On June 4-9, 2013 the Conference of the International Hop Growers Convention took place in Kyiv. The Head of the University, Academician Dmytro O. Melnychuk was elected to be the vice-president of the event. The conference brought together representatives from over 12 countries. During the conference the participants presented their national scientific achievements in hop growing. The International Exhibition “ApiEkspo 2013” was held in Kyiv as a part of XXXXIII Apimondia International Congress. It was attended by over 6,000 representatives of beekeeping industry from 100 countries and at least 300 organizations, enterprises and institutions from all over the world (including NULES of Ukraine). Cutting-edge achievements in beekeeping and innovative developments of the Ukrainian Laboratory of Quality and Safety of Agricultural Products were presented by the scientists of V.A. Nestervodskyy Department of Beekeeping.
- The ERI of Power Engineering and Automation and the Department of Engineering of Warsaw University of Life Sciences signed the agreement on joint training of Ukrainian and Polish master students majoring in “Power Engineering and Automation of Biosystems” in the framework of the Cooperation Agreement between NULES of Ukraine and Warsaw University of Life Sciences.
- NULES of Ukraine is a member of 22 international organizations and a participant of 40 international projects and 14 programs of educational, scientific and technical cooperation.
- 84 foreigner students from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Iraq, Iran, Kazakhstan, Cyprus, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, the USA, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and the Czech Republic studied at the University in 2013(among them 18 master students, 35 bachelor students, 3 postgraduate students, 10 apprentices, 18 trainees).
- As a result of the cooperation agreement between NULES of Ukraine and Mendel University (Brno, Czech Republic) 14 students underwent training at the Education and Research Centre of Biology and Ecology of Subtropical Plants and Landscape Studies (the Southern Affiliate of NULES of Ukraine «Crimean Agrotechnological University», Nikitsky Botanical Garden, Yalta, Crimea). As a result of the cooperation agreement between NULES of Ukraine and Astrakhan State Technical University (Russia) 4 students underwent practical training in the specialty “Water Bioresources and Aquaculture”.
- Separated Subdivisions of NULES of Ukraine also conduct international activities.
- Administrative department of the University properly ensured the educational, scientific, and production processes. The work was carried out in accordance with approved plans of current and fundamental repair works, planned preventive repairs of plumbing, gas and electrical networks and systems of external power supply, maintenance of buildings, dormitories and university territory. During 2013 amount of money spent on current and fundamental repairs amounted to more than UAH 11 million.
- Hostels No. 5 and No. 7, the 4th floor of hostel No. 6, the roof of the hostel No. 7, left side of the 2nd floor of the hostel No. 2 underwent major repairs. Hostel No. 4 is under repairs at the moment. The University implements an energy-saving project: in hostels No. 3, No. 4, No.5, No.7 the windows were replaced by energy-saving ones and the facades were warmed.
- For the first time the University conducted the competition for the best hostel of the University campus. The 1st place was given to hostel No. 5, the 2nd – to hostel No. 7, and the 3rd – to hostels No. 6 and No. 11. The winners received a transitional cup, diplomas, and UAH 5, 000 on the improvement of material resources of the hostel and UAH 5,000 to stimulate the workers and the student government of the hostel. Hostels, who won 2nd and 3rd prizes, obtained UAH 3,000 and UAH 1,500 respectively.
- As part of the Project of Environmental Investments the University continues to warm the facades and replace the windows with the energy-saving ones. As a result of this project, energy savings amount to 30%. Thus, in 2014 the University expects to save UAH 6 million. They will be spent on the development and improvement of material and technical resources of the University.
