History
In 2025, as a result of the merger of the Department of Technologies in Poultry, Pig and Sheep Breeding with the Department of Technologies in Milk and Meat Production (together with their structural divisions), in accordance with the order of the rector of the National University of Life Resources and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine No. 836 dated July 1, 2025, the Department of Animal Technologi was established. The Department is headed by Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor Vadym Lykhach.
Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry Technologies, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor V.Ya. Lykhach
The history of the department begins in the mid-1950s. After the establishment of the Ukrainian Order of the Red Banner of Labor of the Agricultural Academy, as a result of the merger (in 1954) of the Kyiv Agricultural Institute with the Ukrainian Forestry Institute into a single educational institution, the Department of Special Animal Husbandry was established, which was initially headed by Professor M.M. Kolesnyk, and then by Professor K.B. Svechyn (1965-1969). In 1969, the Department of Special Animal Husbandry was divided into two departments. Thus, the Department of Pig, Sheep and Poultry (where beekeeping was also taught) and the Department of Cattle and Horse Breeding were formed.
The Department of Pig Breeding, Sheep Breeding and Poultry Breeding was headed by Professor D.Y. Vasylenko for 20 years.
From 1959 (initially at the Department of Special Zootechnics) to 1982, an outstanding specialist in sheep breeding, scientist, teacher, talented geneticist and breeder D.K. Mikhnovsky worked at the department. He bred the Mountain Carpathian breed of sheep.
He substantiated the evolution of the types of wool cover of sheep on the basis of the primary use of recessive mutations of wool uniformity in the areas of the ancient sheep breeding culture of the Middle East. Thanks to the study of the patterns of wool formation in fine-fleeced sheep by seasons of the year and in connection with the mating and lactation of ewes, he developed a method for preventing wool defects by approaching the timing of shearing and lambing of ewes. He was engaged in industrial crossbreeding techniques in sheep breeding to obtain crossbred wool in Ukraine.

D.Y. Vasylenko (1905-2002 ) D.K. Mikhnovsky (1902-1984)
In 1988, beekeeping, and in 1995, poultry farming and fish farming were separated into independent departments of the Faculty of Animal Engineering. The Department of Poultry Farming was headed by Professors V.P. Boroday (1995-2011), N.P. Ponomarenko (2011-2014). The Department of Pig and Sheep Production Technology was headed by Professor M.V. Shtompel from 1990 to 2003, Associate Professor V.M. Voloshchuk from 2003 to 2004, and Professor Y.V. Zasukha from 2004 to 2013.
It should be noted that the many years of selection work of M.V. Shtompel together with specialists from the breeding plant "Chervony Chaban" has unsurpassed results for the Merino sheep breeding of Ukraine. The quality indicators of wool meet the regulatory requirements of the world level. M.V. Shtompel became one of the authors of the Tavrian intrabreed type of Ascanian fine-wool sheep and six factory lines. His scientific research was aimed at identifying patterns of variability in factory populations of sheep of the Ascanian fine-wool breed. He developed a new (evolutionary) direction in the theory and practice of breeding farm animals.
Under the leadership of V.P. Borodaya at the Department of Poultry Farming carried out scientific work aimed at creating a specialized maternal line of the paternal form of meat chickens, studying the influence of paratypic factors on embryogenesis and meat quality of chickens of various crosses, developing methods for increasing the realization of the genetic potential of egg-laying chickens, studying the quality and safety indicators of products obtained from chickens of various productivity directions and establishing their compliance with EU standards, developing a system for comprehensive assessment of production technologies and quality control of poultry products and technological methods for increasing the productivity of quails of various breeds, studying the genetic structure of populations of egg-laying chickens using microsatellite markers.

M.V. Shtompel (1936-2004) V.P. Boroday (1939-2020)
In accordance with the profile of modern academic disciplines, the Department of Technology of Production of Pig and Sheep Production in 2007 received a new name "Department of Technologies, Economics and Management in Animal Husbandry". In 2013, as a result of the merger of the Department of Poultry Farming with the disbanded Department of Technologies, Economics and Management in Animal Husbandry (profile disciplines in pig farming were transferred to the Department of Milk and Beef Production Technology), the Department of Poultry Farming and Small Animal Husbandry was created, and at the end of 2014 it was named the Department of Technologies in Poultry Farming, Pig and Sheep Farming (since disciplines on pork production technology were returned). The head of the newly created department was Dr. (Agricultural Sciences), Professor, U.V. Zasukha, who headed it until 2019. In the period 2019-2020, the head of the department was Dr. Agricultural Sciences, Professor N.P. Prokopenko. From September 2020 to June 2025, the department was headed by Dr. Agricultural Sciences, Professor V.Y. Lykhach.
