Professor V.L. Symyrenko Department of Horticulture
The Department of Horticulture named after Prof. V.L. Symyrenko is one of the oldest academic units of the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine (NUBiP of Ukraine).
The department traces its origins to the Department of Horticulture and Vegetable Growing, established in 1921, when the Kyiv Agricultural Institute was founded on the basis of the Agronomy Faculty of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.
In 1994, the original department was reorganised into two separate units: the Department of Horticulture and the Department of Vegetable Growing. Over different periods, the Department of Horticulture was headed by prominent scholars, including M.V. Andriienko, P.V. Kondratenko, T.Ye. Kondratenko, I.I. Khomenko, V.T. Hontar, A.M. Sylaieva, and B.M. Mazur.
In 2012, the department was officially named in honour of Professor Volodymyr Levkovych Symyrenko, an outstanding scientist and one of the founders of modern horticultural science in Ukraine.
The department is responsible for training specialists in the field of horticulture and provides education at several levels:
• Bachelor’s Degree Programme – Horticulture, Fruit and Vegetable Growing, and Viticulture
• Master’s Degree Programme – Horticulture, Fruit and Vegetable Growing, and Viticulture
• PhD Programme – Horticulture and Viticulture
Each year the department graduates approximately 20–25 Bachelor’s students and 15–25 Master’s students, who continue their professional careers in horticulture, nursery production, fruit and berry cultivation, and related agricultural sectors.
