І9 “Public Health”

The Department of Public Health and Nutrition at the Faculty of Food Science, Nutrition, and Quality Management of the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine invites gifted and talented young people, as well as graduates of secondary schools and colleges, to enroll in the “Public Health” program (with a specialization in “Nutrition”).

The need to establish this specialty arose from the healthcare reform in Ukraine, which is based on shifting the focus from curative to preventive care through the development of a new public health system on a nationwide basis, as provided for in Chapter 22 of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU.

What does the public health system entail? The updated system focuses on measures that will help Ukrainians improve their quality of life and life expectancy. First and foremost, these include: – food labeling; – developing strategies for immunization, health promotion, and child care; – ensuring high-quality and accessible medical services.

It will contribute to:

• disease prevention, strengthening public health, and increasing life expectancy;

• the effective use of state budget funds to ensure epidemiological surveillance, monitoring, preparedness, and response to threats and emergencies;

• the effective exercise of powers by central executive bodies and other entities;

• the development of a comprehensive approach to addressing public health issues;

• the preservation of the state’s biological safety and protection functions through the creation of a national network of disease control and prevention institutions, etc.

The “Public Health” major is in high demand in European countries and is rapidly developing in Ukraine. The wide range of career opportunities for graduates of this program stems from the acquisition of competencies in disciplines that lie at the intersection of the natural sciences and the humanities: medicine, ecology, biology, statistics, sociology, law, economics, and political science.

Positions that graduates may hold:

- scientists and researchers;

- healthcare facility administrators (dietitians, statisticians, epidemiologists, wellness specialists, bacteriologists, physical therapists, etc.);

- specialists in sanitary and epidemiological management;

- healthcare administrators (deputy chief physicians, experts in healthcare quality);

- public health specialists in state and municipal institutions (regional, district, and city health departments, departments of social protection, ecology, occupational safety, and others);

- experts in insurance companies.

The “Public Health” program has an educational program (EP) SPECIALTY “PUBLIC HEALTH” (Nutrition and Healthy Eating):
