Autumn school for graduates «Young linguist»

October 30, 2017

On October 30, 2017, the solemn opening of the second autumn school for graduates «Young linguist» was held on the basis of the Department of Romance and Germanic Languages and the Department of English Philology of the Humanities and Pedagogical Faculty. This became possible due to the fruitful cooperation and the preliminary work of the teachers of the department, the leadership of the faculty and the university with general educational institutions. The event was attended by more than 30 pupils  of the Ecology and Natural History Lyceum №116 and Gymnasium №179 of the Holosiivskii district of Kyiv, accompanied by their teachers.

Such an event at our university is not for the first time and has become a good tradition. The students were greeted by 4-year students Elena Kurilko and Alina Kutsa,  who told about the system of study of linguists at the departments of the faculty, dwell in detail on the advantages of studying at the university and their own example showed, why it is worth choosing our institution for higher education.

The display of vocational guidance video caused a lot of positive emotions among the students. The video of the last year's school "Young linguist", prepared by the 4th year student Inna Balas, inspired pleasant memories, experiences about events, new impressions and acquaintances, since it is not by chance that among our guests there are those who have come back for the second time.

Moderator of the School "Young Linguist", Ph.D., Assoc. Department of Romance and Germanic languages and translation, Elena Babenko acquainted the participants with the program of the school in English, announced the main events and wished success in the study.

The continuation of the day has become interactive group sessions with the participants of the school, conducted both by teachers of the Department of Romance and Germanic languages and translation, as well as students of the 4th year. PhD, Assoc. B. I. Rubinska during our English phonetics session engaged our guests to study the poem "The Owl and the Pussy Cat", through which students mastered the expressiveness of speech. The task of the students of the first year of the group FIL-17002b and the students was to listen to the verse, and then to play it from memory. In the game form, the teacher showed the difference in reading the verse in the information and declamation phonostyle and explained the value of the slider scale with a high ascending tone. As a result, both pupils and students were able to tell the poem by heart, observing phonetic demands.

Future entrants also gladly joined the cognitive tasks that were prepared for them and conducted by students of the first year of FIL-17001b under the direction of PhD I. S. Hrytsenko. The lesson was held in the form of a competition of two teams (red and blue), which included both young guests and students. Future linguists are very active in answering questions, solving crossword puzzles and guessing English songs. The results of the competition won the blue team, for which the most active participants received thanks from the students of the humanities and pedagogical faculty.

To create a good mood for. PhD., Assoc. O. Babenko demonstrated an animated cartoon in the series "Mr. Bean ", and also learned the song of the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest from Norway in 2009 O. Rybak" Fairytale ".

A pleasant and cognitive completion of the first day of the autumn school was the excursion to the NULES of Ukraine Botanical Garden of Ukraine, which was masterfully conducted by a researcher I. Sliusar. He spoke about the history of creation of the Botanical Garden, its structure, status, collection fund, scientific activity of employees. The audience was interested in rare species of exotic plants collected in the greenhouse, and the beauty and unforgettable aura of the entire Botanical Garden left no one indifferent. The tour guide attracted visitors to an interesting, lively discussion, using special terminology and combining it with their native language, Latin and English. Students were also interested in the aspects of genetic engineering, through which in the future it will be possible to cross, for example, a cricket gen and an orchid gene to produce a new flower variety for landscape design.

The first day of the school turned out to be fruitful and enthusiastic, and all participants are looking forward to the next activities, carefully prepared by the team of the humanities and pedagogfaculty.
