On the penultimate day of the "Autumn School"

November 2, 2017

An interpreter is not just a profession, it is a mission. Mission of the peacemaker!

On the penultimate day of the "Autumn School", the 2nd of November, 2nd year undergraduate students and masters of 1 and 2 years of study staged a real concert, in which they performed almost in all possible genres: singing, playing guitar, talking, reciting, playing in all kinds of linguistic games, made presentations, showed photos. Children did not want to leave the school for a long time after the end of such a lively and cognitive meeting: they learned to play the guitar with Sasha Kurganov, who masterly performed musical compositions with a magnificent, though a little creepy, video on the TV screen. But let's get it all in order.

An interpreter's profession has a long history, starting with the biblical legend of the Babylonian tower - the symbol of the diversity of languages and the need to interpret all human languages. The student's attention was focused on the main mission of the interpreter that is peacekeeping, because many wars were avoid with their help throughout the history of mankind. Translators are always peacekeepable "bridges" between two militant and aggressively-minded parties resorting to weapons, instead of talking through an interpreter.

This is what Lida Shoha has told about, and not only that. She made the children laugh with pictures of various funny mistakes, made by translators in advertising, documents, signboards, menus, various names of goods, shops, etc. Then, Alina Kharchuk joined Lida and together they proposed children a "brainstorming" - a crossword puzzle, the lerning of a song in which it was necessary to insert the words in every line of text, then as real connoisseurs, the children compared the original and the translation of the famous children's poem "House that Jack built himself ", finding translation losses and achievements in it. The children showed that they not only like to entertain, but also, they are able to concentrate and thoughtfully perform complex intellectual tasks.

Alevtina Kharchuk and Kristina Petrushko, 2nd year students, have prepared presentations, showing the children how the learning process is going on. Each of them deeply worked on the topic of translation (Kharchuk A. - the translation of films and their names, Christina - the peculiarities of the usage and transfering the semantic content of articles in special contexts) and presented them in PowerPoint. After such a serious lecture, children were given the opportunity to relax and have fun again. So, the performances were announced one after the other. Student of a magistracy Konchakivskaya Tatiana arranged an interactive lesson of English based on the material of the film about London. After reviewing a specific passage, the children answered the questions about the interesting facts of this magnificent city. Wasn’t it interesting to find out that just recently, Big Ben was stopped for three years due to overhaul? And that the interesting new office building with spiral shapes is called "cucumber" by locals - a cucumber, because it really resembles this vegetable. The children watched videos about the US and state capitals attentively, and then pondered wherever they would like to live.

The horror element was also present at the meeting, because on the eve of it many countries had celebrated the feast of all the dead, ghosts, witches and all sorts of devils - Halloween. The history of the generation and celebration of this holiday was explained in the films presented by Julia Vovkhon, 1 st year student of magistracy. The magic atmosphere of Halloween was accompanied by mysterious surrealistic music performed by Alexander Kurganov, who ended this interesting meeting. The amazing video was accompanying the compositions - in brilliant cartoons children could guess ghosts, aliens, disasters, natural disasters, wars - all that threatens the existence of mankind. The meeting was not ended by sad and depressing frames. Associate professor Rubins'ka B.I. showed the wonderful photos she made when she visited Australia five years ago. The children couldn’t stay indifferent with the funny faces of the koala, the jaws of gluttonous sharks, the charming nature of parks and woods, architectural masterpieces and monuments of the history of the Australian continent.

The children got knowledge, had fun - they had an enjoyable time and promised to come again. At their request, a group photo of everyone who participated in this event was made.
