Academic Visit to China: Exchange of Experience and Cultural Traditions

November 18, 2024

Svitlana Kovalenko, Senior Lecturer at the Department of English for Technical and Agrobiological Specialties, visited China as part of an academic exchange program, representing Ukrainian science, culture, and history.

In September, Svitlana Kovalenko, as part of a delegation of NULES lecturers, traveled to the city of Linyi, where she collaborated with the local university. She delivered a series of lectures to Chinese students on topics such as animal husbandry, bioengineering, and food science, while also introducing them to key aspects of Ukrainian history. Beyond her academic work, participants in the program engaged in roundtable discussions, thematic debates, and informal networking events like coffee breaks, fostering professional connections.

A highlight of the visit was excursions to local museums and cultural landmarks, including the Museum of Writing and the Sculpture Park. These activities allowed guests to immerse themselves in Chinese culture and traditions. In addition to Chinese students, Svitlana Kovalenko interacted with students from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Morocco, adding an international dimension to the exchange of experience.

From November 10, Svitlana Kovalenko continued her activities in the city of Hangzhou, where she is delivering lectures on polymers and sharing insights about Ukraine with Chinese students. She emphasizes that her stories about Ukraine spark genuine interest among her listeners and serve as a catalyst for further dialogue.

The main language of communication during the visit was English. While not all Chinese students are proficient in the language, this did not hinder engaging and productive conversations. Svitlana Kovalenko taught the Chinese students a few Ukrainian words, and in return, they introduced her to the basics of the Chinese language. This linguistic exchange not only brought participants closer but also underscored the importance of mutual understanding in today's world.

During the collaboration, some interesting characteristics of Chinese students were observed. They are distinguished by high discipline, responsibility, and a strong desire for excellence. They actively participate in group projects and scientific research, demonstrating collectivism and teamwork, though they rarely improvise.

Regarding cultural traditions, Chinese people exhibit great respect for family values. They adhere to cultural customs such as family celebrations and preserving traditional symbols in daily life. A strong sense of collectivism is also deeply ingrained in their culture.

On the final day of the delegation’s stay in Linyi, the students organized a farewell evening featuring flowers, souvenirs, and heartfelt wishes. They expressed hope for further collaboration.

Both sides demonstrated a genuine desire for communication and exchange of experiences, building a strong bridge between cultures and educational systems.

The academic visit was made possible through the fruitful collaboration between NULES and Linyi University. This experience contributed not only to professional growth but also to expanding cultural horizons, establishing international connections, and promoting a positive image of Ukraine on the global stage.
