University Scientists Participated in the First International Congress “Ukrainian Garlic for the World”

     The First International Congress “Ukrainian Garlic for the World” took place on November 20-22, 2014, in Lviv. The congress was held for the first time in Ukraine at the initiative of the team of the Association of Garlic Manufacturers of Ukraine and “Best Garlic of Ukraine” Company. The purpose of the congress was to present Ukrainian garlic at the global vegetable market as a high quality product for fresh consumption, canning and pharmaceutics. The National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine was represented by the delegation consisting of Professor of the Department of Horticulture, Zinoviy Sych, Head of the Department of Innovative Activity and Technology Transfer, Professor Vasyl Turynskyy, and Chief Agronomist of the Separated Subdivision of NULES of Ukraine “O.V. Muzychenko Velykosnitynske Education and Research Farm”, Volodymyr Saliyenko

     Garlic production in Ukraine has become significant. The area planted with this vegetable in Ukraine is over 22 thousand hectares. This year the Separated Subdivision of NULES of Ukraine “O.V. Muzychenko Velykosnitynske Education and Research Farm” started implementation of the innovative project on growing garlic and for the first time the area planted with cloves, bulbils and bulblets is 21 hectares.

     The Congress was attended by Ukrainian scientists and representatives from Spain, Israel, USA, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Serbia, Belarus, Estonia and Latvia. Professor Z.D. Sych made two presentations on international and Ukrainian peculiarities of garlic production and success factors in cultivation technology. Marketing offers of Ukrainian garlic manufacturers for European markets were met with significant interest.
