Drevlyanskyy Nature Reserve Is a Unique Base for Radiological Research

August 18, 2014

Ukrainian Research Institute of Agricultural Radiology is a structural subdivision of the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine. The scientists of the Institute solve the issues of agricultural production in the contaminated areas, which is a major problem in agricultural radiology in Ukraine.

Together with the Deputy Head for Scientific Activities, Anatoliy O. Mozhar, at the nature reserve

In spring 2014, the scientists of the institute started an experiment at the territory of Drevlyanskyy Nature Reserve in Narodytskyy district of Zhytomyr region. The experiment is a part of the scientific programme “Study of changes of physical and chemical status, mobility and bioavailability of radionuclides 90Sr and 137Cs under the influence of soil microflora” (scientific supervisor — Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor I.M. Gudkov). The aim of the experiment is to obtain data on accumulation of 137Cs and 90Sr by rape, wheat and millet provided pre-treatment of seeds with bacterial preparations containing microorganisms that according to preliminary data hinder their transition from soil.

Sampling at the experimental site

The experiment has three repetitions, thirteen options and control stage. Sampling was conducted in three phases. Prepared samples were analysed in the laboratory of the Research Institute of Agricultural Radiology.

It is time for work in the laboratory

As a result, the data on the power of gamma background in the experimental area was obtained and analysed and agrochemical soil analysis was conducted. Currently an active phase of measurements of the specific activity of soil and green mass of plants takes place.
