Experience exchange with foresters from Bangladesh

    The Education and Research Institute of Forestry and Landscape-Park Management often participates in international webinars aimed at sharing experience, knowledge and advanced technologies.

    Among such events was the international scientific-practical webinar “National Forest Inventory Tools: Example of Bangladesh”. During the webinar Tauhidor Rahaman, forester, expert in GIS, remote sensing and forest inventory of the Department of Forestry of Bangladesh, shared his experience during the National Forest Inventory of Bangladesh. The webinar was attended by more than 30 participants, including students of the Kyiv Forestry Students Association student group, representatives of the National Forest Inventory Center of Ukraine and colleagues from Bangladesh, Kenya, Indonesia and the Philippines.

    Tauhidor Rahaman presented a comprehensive report outlining the organization of the National Forest Inventory in Bangladesh in 2016, which aimed to gather information on the current state of forest resources, as well as to contribute to the planning of the forest management process at the national level, making political decisions and bringing forestry legislation in line with international requirements.
   To explain the peculiarities of Bangladesh forests, the speaker described the differences in the areas - from the mangrove forests of Sundarbana to the forests of lard and evergreen jungles. Afterwards, he dwelled on the process of selection of sites for measurements, gave examples of such sites and outlined the technical features of forest inventories. Particular attention was paid to the use of the Open Foris mobile application for data collection.
 

 

   In conclusion, the speaker summarized the main results of the National Forest Inventory in Bangladesh, such as a map of Bangladesh forests, a detailed composition of forests, identification of 12 endangered species, determining the absolute completeness and density of plantations, as well as the pace of natural regeneration, identifying volumes of above-ground biomass, stocks of stands,and deposited carbon, and establishing the range of ecosystem services provided by national forests. The final part of the webinar consisted of the Q&A session, during which Tauhidor Rahaman provided answers to numerous questions, shared useful links and invited the participants to future cooperation.
