Online seminar “From Crisis to Contribution: Ukraine's Role in Advancing Health Diplomacy”

The seminar is organized by Health Bridge, a collaboration project between Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, Bogomolets National Medical University, the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences, Ukraine and the University of Latvia.

The project aims to contribute to a healthier, safer region by strengthening collaboration and building a health diplomacy network across the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe.

Ukraine is generating knowledge that exists nowhere else: in health system resilience under pressure, crisis management, and academic continuity during conflict. The seminar aims to make this knowledge visible and legible to an international audience — and to examine the role of academic partnerships as an instrument of diplomacy.

Prof. Serhiy Dubrov will present "Ukraine from the inside: what the system looks like under pressure," weaving together the perspectives of clinician, administrator, and academic. Dr. Dubrov currently serves as Director General of Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 12, having previously served as Ukraine's First Deputy Minister of Health. He is a Doctor of Medical Sciences and Professor and built his earlier career at O. O. Bogomolets National Medical University, where he headed the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care.

Prof. Dorit Nitzan will speak on "From emergency response to health diplomacy: a regional perspective." Dr. Nitzan built a 17-year career at WHO, including as WHO Representative to Ukraine, Serbia, Montenegro, and Kosovo, and later as Regional Emergency Director for the WHO European Region — a role in which she led missions to Ukraine during the full-scale war. She currently directs the School of Public Health at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.

Natalya Pidmurniak, member of the Youth Council under Ukraine's Ministry of Health and a graduate of Karolinska Institutet's certificate programme in health diplomacy, will close the session with a youth perspective — her own path into the field, the work of the Youth Council, and what international cooperation looks like from where she stands.
