History (Mission & Vision)

The Department of Crop Growing at the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine (NUBiP) traces its roots to the very beginning of agricultural higher education in Kyiv. The department’s teaching and scientific activity began in 1898 as part of the agricultural division at Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and later evolved alongside the agronomic faculty and Kyiv Agricultural Institute institutions that formed the core of today’s NUBiP. The department has a long tradition of research and practical work in improving soil fertility, seed production and crop technologies; early leadership included professors who organized seed-testing and applied crop systems research that shaped Ukrainian agronomy in the 20th century.

Mission of the department is to educate specialists and perform research that improves productivity, resilience and sustainability of crop production combining classical agronomy (soil fertility, crop physiology, seed production) with modern approaches to cropping systems suited to Ukraine’s climate and soils.
The goal is to be a national and international centre of excellence in crop science that develops climate-resilient, resource-efficient cropping technologies and trains practitioners and scientists who ensure food security and sustainable land use in Ukraine.

The department’s long history over a century of continuous teaching and applied research gives it institutional depth while current activity focuses on modern challenges: improving yield and quality, sustainable fertilization, seed and varietal improvement, and adaptation to climate change.
