Department of Beekeeping

History

Department of horse-breeding and beekeeping was established according to the order No. 1446 dated December 25, 2014 by combining of two unique in Ukraine departments: department of horse-breeding, horse-keeping and livestock economics and beekeeping department named ofter V. A. Nestervodsky.

The Department of horse-breeding originates from an Agricultural Department of Kiev Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1898. During the period from 1921 to 1930 in the structure of Veterinary and Zootechnical Institute were the Department of horse-breeding and horse-keeping, headed by Master S. P. Amitrov, and the Department of horse shoeing and hoof disease, headed by Master K. M. Shevandin.

After relocation of Zootechnical Department to Dnepropetrovsk, the subject "Horse-breeding" was taught at the Department of Animal Husbandry. During the reorganization of the Agricultural Department of Kiev Polytechnic Institute into Kiev Agricultural Institute (1922), and later in the Ukrainian Agricultural Academy (1957), was established the Special Zootechnical Department, headed by Professor M. M. Kolesnik, and subsequently Professor K. B. Svechin.

In 1969 inside this Department were set up the other two units: the Department of cattle-breeding and horse-breeding (head K. B. Svechin) and the Department of sheep, pig and poultry husbandry (head Professor D. Y Vasilenko).

In 1994 according to order No. 199 dated June 26 was established the Department of horse-breeding and livestock economics. In founding the Department was headed by Professor B.M. Gopka, since 2003 - Assistant Professor I.I. Glushak, in 2012 - Professor I.V. Goncharenko, since 2012 - candidate of Agricultural Sciences, doctor of Economics - Skotsyk Vitaliy.

As an academic discipline beekeeping was in the list of course units of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Kiev Agricultural Institute, since 1945 up to 1948, inclusive. The Department of apiculture operated at the same institute. Later it became a part of the disciplines of the Animal Husbandry Department.

In 1972 began training of animal technicians with the specialization of beekeeping. The joint initiative of our University administration and Ukrbdzholoprom was endorsed by the relevant government structures. They have identified the additional admission limit with the specialty up to 25 people for full-time and part-time study.

In 1977 was the first graduation of such specialists in Ukraine. Systematic replenishment of agriculture by animal technicians with the specialty in beekeeping has significantly improved the state of the industry. The graduates worked on various positions in Ukrbdzholoprom (from senior district livestock experts to managers of regional industry structures) and also became teachers and    scientists.

This contributed to the creation of informal beekeeping division in the Department of pig, sheep and poultry husbandry, that was subjected to all educational and scientific work of the corresponding profile. It was time to allocate the beekeeping in the University as a separate structure - a new Department.

In 1988 the Department of apiculture was formed as a new structure and in 1995 it was named after the first head of the Department - a tireless researcher and scientist V. A. Nestervodsky.
