History of the department
Throughout its long history, the Department has developed a collection of plant specimens affected by various diseases. Today, this collection constitutes a unique museum with no equivalent in Ukraine.
The Department’s research and teaching laboratory houses an extensive collection of fungal strains that cause plant diseases.
The Department conducts research in mycology and has established a strong reputation in Ukraine for the originality of its mycological research and the practical significance of its findings. Plant diseases caused by microscopic fungi result in substantial losses by reducing crop yields, diminishing product quality, and adversely affecting the environment. Research on these fungi requires specialized expertise. Therefore, the Department’s researchers, postgraduate students, and undergraduate students develop and improve methods for studying these organisms, incorporating modern technologies and collaborating with research institutions in Ukraine and abroad.
Field research is conducted at the phytopathological research site located in the village of Pshenychne, Vasylkiv District, Kyiv Region, at the NULES of Ukraine’s Separate Structural Subdivision, Agronomic Research Station. These studies are carried out by the Department’s academic staff, postgraduate students, and students undertaking their degree research projects.
Today, the V. F. Peresypkin Department of phytopathology is a leading Ukrainian academic and research unit in the training of specialists and researchers in plant pathology, applied mycology, and plant disease management. The Department’s scientific achievements are recognized both in Ukraine and internationally. Disease-resistant wheat and rapeseed varieties developed at the Department are cultivated throughout Ukraine.
The Department has benefited from the dedicated work of Professors Yu. V. Kaliuzhnyi (1968–2011) and I. L. Markov (1968–2015), as well as Associate Professors O. H. Landar (1952–1979), L. P. Hoichuk, also made significant contributions to the development of the Department’s research infrastructure.
