The Department of Geoinformation Systems and Technologies was established in 2003 at the Faculty of Land Management with the support of the international project TEMPUS-TACIS "Product Quality: From Soil to Consumer". The establishment of the department was preceded by the participation of the NAU (National Agrarian University) in an international project that started in 1997. It was attended by the NUBiP of Ukraine (then NAU), the Crimean Agrotechnology University, Ghent University (Ghent University), Belgium, and Humboldt University (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin), Germany. One of the components of the project was the completion of a scientific internship and the preparation of training courses in a number of disciplines, including GIS. The question of establishing a department at the Faculty of Land Management arose in 2002. It was then that former President Leonid Kuchma visited the opening of the reconstructed educational building No. 6. The Department of Geographic Information Systems and Technologies became one of the first GIS departments not only in higher agricultural educational institutions, but also in universities in general. The founder of the department and its first head was Associate Professor Svitlana Stanislavivna Kokhan.

The department has brought together specialists in geoinformatics, geoinformation technologies, geodatabases, digital processing of remote sensing data, and intellectual analysis of geospatial data. The department's significant achievements include 2 modern laboratories and 3 computer classes, not only educational and methodological materials, textbooks, manuals (including English-language ones), monographs, scientific articles, and developed electronic courses, of which there are 22 today, but also scientific projects in which its employees were involved, including scholarships and international grants. Their total number is 18.

Since the foundation of the department, highly qualified teachers and scientists have worked at it, who have made a significant contribution to its formation: professors Shadchyna T.M., Shykula O.M., associate professors Kobets M.I., Chaika V.D., Nazarenko N.M., Polishchuk I.P., Prokopyuk N.P., Moskalenko A.A. The department also included associate professor Bohdanets V.A., senior lecturers Shvaiko V.G., Gez T.A., assistants Bidolakh D.V., Ivanyuta O.O., Shkvyr I.M., Novikov O.I.

Special thanks on behalf of the entire staff of the department to our teachers, namely Academician Gorodny M.M., Professors Shadchyna T.M., Burshtynskaya H.V., whose deep knowledge is the basis for the application of geospatial data, inspired scientific research. Anatoly Borisovich Vostokov, senior researcher, retired colonel of the Space Forces, became an honorary teacher, mentor, true professional, wise and friendly colleague for the entire department for many years. His military experience, professionalism, deep theoretical knowledge of the properties of geospatial data, remote sensing methods, unsurpassed practical skills in working with geodata, extraordinary accuracy and correctness in work, made an invaluable contribution to the life of the department, to the development of its scientific areas. Most of the scientific monographs, textbooks, teaching aids of the department, scientific recommendations for production were created in cooperation with him. Unfortunately, fate takes the best, often the young and talented, and therefore the department celebrated its 20th anniversary with deep loss.

From 2003 to 2010, 2012-2022, the department was headed by Dr. Sci., Professor S.S. Kokhan. During 2011–2012, the duties of the head of the department were performed by Dr. Sci., Senior Researcher T.M. Shadchyna - a well-known specialist in the field of plant physiology and theoretical foundations and methods of remote monitoring of the state of grain crops, author of more than 110 scientific and scientific-methodical works. In the first half of 2023, the duties of the head of the department were performed by Ph.D., Associate Professor O.P. Drozdivsky. Starting from the second half of 2023, the duties of the head of the department began to be performed by Ph.D., Associate Professor Moskalenko A.A., and starting from 2025 she took up the position of head of the department.

In 2016, the department was renamed the Department of Geoinformatics and Aerospace Research of the Earth.

The educational and scientific work of the department is aimed at implementing fundamental and applied applications of geoinformation technologies, methods of processing remote sensing data, applied geostatistics in monitoring geosystems, nature management, and environmental protection.

In May 2023, the department's staff celebrated the 20th anniversary of its founding.
