Department of Soil Science and Soil Protection named after Professor M.K. Shykula is the leading department of the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, the graduating department of the Faculty of Agrobiology. He trains specialists in the specialty H1 Agronomy of educational degrees "Bachelor" and "Master" (according to the OPP "Protection and Soil Recovery Technologies"), teaches soil science disciplines at many faculties of the university. The department has postgraduate and doctoral studies in the scientific specialty 06.01.03 "Agrosoilology and agrophysics".
The educational, scientific and educational process is provided by 15 scientific and pedagogical workers, including 6 doctors of agricultural sciences and 9 candidates of sciences. Professor A.D. Balaev is the chairman of the Kyiv branch of the Ukrainian Society of Soil Scientists and Agrochemists.
Scientists of the scientific school of Professor M.K. Shikulas on the basis of long-term fundamental research developed and introduced into production soil-protective technologies of growing crops for the main soil and climatic zones of Ukraine, which ensure the preservation and restoration of organic matter of the soil; increase of moisture supply of crops by increasing the content of productive moisture in the soil; improvement of structural and aggregate composition and prevention of agrophysical degradation of soils; protection of soil from water and wind erosion
