OverviewFurthermore you will read in this edition: Digitalization in Agriculture © BillionPhoto │ Fotolia.com | Effects of social media on the marketing of agricultural productsIn January 2019, IAMO launched the project “Digitalization in Agriculture - The social media impact on agri-food marketing” (AgriDigital). Within the research project, the effects of social media on the relationships between agri-food producers and consumers will be evaluated. A special focus is on what agri-food producers should consider when creating their marketing campaigns. IAMO director Thomas Glauben and IAMO researchers Ivan Duric and Borislav Rajkovic are collaborating with partners from the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Belgrade, Serbia. The two-year project is financially supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Further information on the project can be found here.

Consumer behaviour © vectorfusionart │ Fotolia.com | Consumer trust in agricultural and food businesses in the Western BalkansWithin the project “Determinants of consumer trust towards agro-food systems in Western Balkan” (eTrust-Food), IAMO researchers investigate the links between consumers and value chain actors in the agricultural sector. Understanding consumer behaviour is of crucial importance for the countries that are aiming at accession to the large structured markets (such as EU) where understanding consumer needs represent one of the most important tools for being competitive. Therefore, the research team aims at identifying consumer trust factors and then to analyse marketing promotion strategies of agro-food companies that regain or enhance consumer trust. The project is supported by the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Belgrade, Serbia, and the TUM School of Management at the Technical University Munich, Germany, as well as by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Further information on the project can be found here.

Farmland in Germany © Jana Lösch │ Fotolia.com | Online survey on agricultural land marketsAs part of the DFG research group “Agricultural Land Markets - Efficiency and Regulation” (FORLand), IAMO is conducting an online survey together with the University of Bonn, Germany. Rental and purchase prices for agricultural land have risen continuously in recent years. This fact is particularly relevant for farmers. In their research, the project's scientists therefore deal with the questions of how land markets function and how regulations affect farmers and society. The aim of the survey is to find out the views of farmers, including sole traders, shareholders, owners and employees. The FORLand project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). Here you can participate in the online survey until 18 April 2019.

Science Lounge with panelists © IAMO | Opportunities and risks of digitization in agricultureOn 6 March 2019, a Science Lounge with experts from research, business and politics was held on the topic “Digitization in Agriculture” in the Café 7gramm in Halle (Saale), Germany. On the podium, Matija Zulj, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and founder of Agrivi, Oleksandr Verzhykhovskyi, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the agricultural company IMC SA, and IAMO researcher Ivan Duric discussed the challenges of digitization in German and Eastern European agriculture together with guest of honour Thomas Wünsch, State Secretary in the Ministry of Economics, Science and Digitization of Saxony-Anhalt. Sensor technology, use of drones, statistics-based algorithms for harvest estimation, precise sowing and fertilization, apps for farmers – there are extensive opportunities to use smart technologies. The guests agreed that significant cost and labour savings can be achieved through digitization. For the expansion of digitization, however, the corresponding prerequisites for a functioning infrastructure and the targeted training of workers must also be created. The Science Lounge was presented by Ina Volkhardt from the ScienceCampus Halle (WCH). The event was organised by IAMO together with the Leibniz ScienceCampus “Eastern Europe – Global Area” (EEGA) and the ScienceCampus Halle - Plant-based Bioeconomy (WCH). Further information on the Science Lounge can be found here.

From the grain to bread © mylasa │ Fotolia.com | Insecurities and price developments in the agricultural sectorIn December 2018, IAMO participated in the organisation of a plenary session at the annual conference of the Leibniz Research Alliance “Crises in a Globalised World” on the topic “Making Crises Visible/Invisible” in Berlin, Germany. The conference session “Food insecurity, food price developments, and social protests” was organised within the working group “Humanitarian Crises” by the coordinator of the research alliance, Stefan Kroll, Peace Research Institute Frankfurt, and co-spokesman of the working group, Linde Götz, IAMO. IAMO researcher Osama Ahmed focused in his presentation on “Post-Arab Spring macroeconomic reforms and price developments in the wheat-to-bread supply chain in Egypt”. From the point of view of agricultural economics, he examined the effects of the political changes of the Egyptian government concerning the price developments in agricultural supply chain. In order to combat food insecurity in a country where famine is worrisome, further actions down the marketing chain are required in order to increase the competitive behaviour of this chain and facilitate smooth price transmission such as develop a market information system using online market to increase the competitiveness between all actors along the supply chain. Further information on the annual conference can be found here.
An article on project work in Egyptian farming by Osama Ahmed can be found here.

IAMO Policy Brief 36 © IAMO | Farm Restructuring in UzbekistanIn March 2019, researchers Martin Petrick and Nodir Djanibekov published the IAMO Policy Brief 36 entitled “Farm Restructuring in Uzbekistan: What Next?”. In January 2019, the Uzbek government initiated a new wave of farm consolidation. In order to enable a successful transformation of agriculture, the output and factor markets must be gradually liberalized and care taken to ensure that all farmers receive undistorted market signals and access to an optimal set of supporting public services. The IAMO Policy Brief 36 aims to evaluate the success of farm restructuring in the Uzbek agricultural sector and examines how policy makers can promote agricultural competitiveness without losing sight of the social consequences of reforms. The publication appears in German, Russian and Uzbek. The issues can be downloaded free of charge here.

Coordinator Anett Krause | Promotion of young scientists at IAMOSince February 2019, IAMO coordinator Anett Krause has been supporting the institute's researchers as part of the “Young Scientists Programme”. An essential main task of IAMO is the qualification of young academics. In addition to structured scientific training and supervision, researchers are also supported outside their purely technical qualifications. In order to further expand the support work in the promotion of young scientists, e.g. due to the special “Scholarship and Guest Programme”, an additional position was created to coordinate the “Young Scientists Programme”. In this area, Anett Krause is the contact person for PhD students and postdocs. She advises on scientific information and further training programmes, develops new formats for the promotion of young scientists, supports the scientific management of the doctoral programme and is involved in various networks. Parallel to her work at IAMO, Anett Krause is currently a lecturer in science communication at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.
