Cuba reinforces management and strategy against forest fires

Havana, Feb 27 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is developing a national program of management of forest fires until 2025, with a multifactorial and comprehensive nature, to be deployed throughout the year.
The authorities and organizations involved in this effort call to support and actively participate in the implementation of their action plans, since the individual or collective contribution from all fronts is decisive, as quoted by the local press.

The drawn strategy extremes intervention and prevention actions between January and May, the driest and more fire-prone months, although surveillance is permanent.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) called 2019 a year of fires and climate stress due to the havoc wreaked by catastrophic disasters in South America, Africa, Australia, Siberia and parts of the Arctic, Greenland and Alaska.

These fires, as the WMO points out, grow more extensive or large, intense and persistent, as a result of which hundreds of tons of gases that intensify global warming, such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and non-methane organic compounds rise into the atmosphere, while the loss of millions of hectares of forests leads to an alarming decrease in the absorption capacity of Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere.

In Australia, where the most recent and catastrophic fire took place, the flames razed more than 11 million hectares of forests, killed 33 people, destroyed thousands of homes and villages, caused incalculable losses of natural resources, and it has been noted that the Koala, animal national symbol of the country, is functionally extinct.
